Trade has often been presented as a panacea for economic growth and poverty reduction. As the volume of international soars, successive Nigerian governments continue to seek and implement policies to increase trade and growth.Nigeria, despite decades of stable and increasing trade volumes, continues to experience growing rates in poverty and inequality. This thesis examines the impact of international trade in Nigeria over the past two decades.Quantitative analysis done using panel data from 1996 to 2016.An inferential statistic technique was used to analyse the data by testing three hypotheses. The thesis finds that that there is no cointegration between trade openness and economic growth on the one hand, and with poverty reduction,on the other hand.It will therefore be helpful to pursue macroeconomic stability through reduction of budgetary imbalances by reducing the size and role of government and pursue a greater reliance on the private sector development financing.
