With the acceleration of internationalization, the demand for second language learning is increasing.MALL(mobile assisted language learning)has become an appealing language learning tool due to its convenience and interaction. However, the existing MALL vocabulary learning software does not theoretically and functionally consider modality design and its impact on memory effect on learners. This thesis aims to embrace multi-modality theory into the design of MALL software, applying multiple combinations of visual, auditory, and tactile modalities into exploring vocabulary memory strategies,as well as helping learners to obtain effective vocabulary learning experiences. This research designed a mobile vocabulary learning software based on multi-modality theory and explored its efficacy on learners' immediate and delayed memory. In this thesis, visual modality, audio modality and tactile modality are considered as design factors in model establishment. With the ten-day experimental study,12 participants learned 84 pseudo-words generated by algorithms. The results indicated that tactile modality can significantly help learners improve their scores on immediate memory tests by 24%and their scores on long-term memory tests by 31%.Meanwhile,the combination of visual and haptic modality is only significant in the immediate memory test, and the combination of multi-modality(visual,audio and haptic)is significant in delayed test.According to these findings, this thesis verified the multi-modality hypothesis model and validated the significance of its memory effect. What's more, the author explored its guidance and insights for future research on MALL software design. The main contribution of this thesis are as follows(1)The combination of multi-modality theory and MALL vocabulary learning software design by investigating the problems from an interdisciplinary perspective of pedagogy education, cognitive psychology theory and human-computer interaction design. Also, this thesis proposed a universal MALL software design approach for different learning types(2)Validated the significance of multi-modality model in MALL through conducting within-subject comparative experiment. The results showed significant improvement in subjects'immediate and delayed memory test.(3)Designed a universal MALL software which was suitable for different learning types and utilized it as a tool for experiment study. Also, the research provides design guidelines and shed light on mobile learning strategies. The thesis applied a multi-modality model into vocabulary memory which extended the boundaries of MALL learning strategies.Besides, the study validated the significance of the model in improving vocabulary learning and memory efficacy through within-subject experiments. The discussion on the implications of the research findings are presented and potentially provided insights for further research.
