Liquid crystal itself does not emit light and requires a backlight unit to provide brightness to the display area.Compared with traditional LEDs,Mini-LED has advantages of lower cost,lower power consumption,larger viewing angle,wider color gamut,and faster response time,which can make an LCD thinner and achieve finer dynamic dimming.Mini-LED has become the research focus in the area of backlight.In addition,with the increasing improvement on consumer lift,there appears higher requirements on image quality and power consumption of LCD monitors.However,the backlight brightness of a traditional LCD cannot be dimmed,which not only wastes energy but also shows the phenomenon of light leakage leading to poor image display quality.Direct-type local dynamic dimming technology gradually highlights its advantages under this background.This paper first introduces the basic structure and display principle of the liquid crystal display in detail,analyzes and compares the different characteristics and application advantages of Mini-LED backlight technology compared to the traditional backlight technology.Then,the current research results of local dynamic dimming algorithms are listed in detail,their advantages and limitations are summarized,and a local dimming algorithm for liquid crystal display based on image local brightness characteristics is proposed.Subsequently,a software simulation was performed on the Matlab platform,and the algorithms were evaluated and compared using a variety of classic subjective and objective evaluation standards.The results show that it can reasonably reduce the backlight power consumption of a display,and the image truncation noise is significantly suppressed,the color and brightness distortion is obviously improved,and it has good applicability to all kinds of images.Finally,a prototype of a local dynamic dimming liquid crystal display based on Mini-LED is designed.Its hardware part mainly includes the main control board and backlight module with FPGA and ARM as the core,and the software part mainly includes a variety of interface modules and Verilog HDL based design language for dynamic dimming algorithm.The detailed analysis and summary of the problems encountered in the development process are presented.
