In the electric circuits, power amplify is one of the most important radio frequency and microwave function.Early microwave amplifiers were all vacuum tube devices, but the rapid development of solid-state technology is gradually impacting the advantages of vacuum tube.Solid-state devices have great advantages in reliability, durability, operating characteristics, volume and cost.At present,solid-state power amplifiers have been widely used in radar, electronic countermeasures, wireless communications and other systems. This paper mainly discusses an X-band microwave amplifier for radar transmitter.Firstly, the related theory of microwave power amplifier and the general design essentials of power amplifier are briefly introduced. Then, according to the design requirements of X-band microwave power amplifier, the selection of microwave power devices and circuits is discussed. The bias circuit design, matching circuit design, power division/synthesis design, coupler design and reliability design of power amplifier(including electromagnetic compatibility, thermal design and so on)are described in detail, and the assembly of power amplifier is realized through a series of simulation design and micro-assembly technology. Then the test system is built to debug and test the amplifier, and the problems in the development process are analyzed and verified, and the solutions are put forward. The developed power amplifier has the characteristics of high frequency, high power and small volume. The final test results show that the performance index meets the design requirements and the amplifier meets the design expectation.
