With the characteristics of self-organization,rapid deployment,reliable service and strong expansibility,Wireless Mesh Networks(WMN)can be deployed and expanded easily without the infrastructure support such as wire networks.Therefore,WMN are applied widely.At present,the wireless transceivers with omnidirectional antenna are used in WMN commonly.Communication with omnidirectional antenna not only has the low efficiency of signal energy transmission,but also has the mutual interference problems among adjacent nodes.Thus the network capacity of WMN is greatly limited.With the high spacial reusability and strong antiinterference performance,the smart antenna can be applied to improve the bandwidth utilization and network capacity by solving the problems caused by the omnidirectional antenna.Aiming to improve the network performance,the routing technologies for wireless mesh network based on smart antenna are explored and researched in this paper.Firstly,through comprehensive discussions on characteristics of WMN,smart antennas and the advantages of WMN based on smart antennas,the application prospects of WMN based on smart antennas are presented,and the problems brought about by smart antennas are analyzed,such as neighbor discovery,network connectivity,and routing constraints.Secondly,by exploiting the advantages and disadvantages of wireless mesh network routing technology based on smart antennas,Multiple Paths Routing for WMN with Multiple Beam Smart Antennas(MPRMBSA)is proposed for wireless mesh networks based on multiple beam smart antennas(MBSAs).MPRMBSA consists of two parts: the main path and the side path.Improved AODV routing technology is adopted to construct a main path with the smallest probability of congestion,the side path is constructed around the main path which makes the traffic converge and diverge periodically in the main path,and thus the simultaneous data delivery capability of multi-beam antennas can be exploited and the network performance can be enhanced.Beam steering problems can also be solved by modifying the hello message handling mechanism and establishing and maintaining directional neighbor tables.Finally,by building a corresponding simulation model on the OPNET,a simulation analysis was performed on the MPRMBSA routing method,and compared with the simulation results of the directional AODV routing and RDC routing under the same model.Our simulations demonstrate the superior throughput,delay and packet loss performance of the proposed scheme under random topological structure.
