The Internet of Things(IoT)is as vast as it sounds-spanning all industries, the enterprise and customers, but many business still struggle to enable seamless interoperability.Interoperability is the ability of two or more systems or components to exchange information and to use the information that has been exchanged. It is the cornerstone for large-scale IoT deployment. The interoperability can be classified into four layers: technical interoperability, syntactical interoperability, semantic interoperability and organizational interoperability. The technical interoperability has been the focus of most standards organizations, alliances and consortia for many years.Consequently, strategies, standards and implementations supporting this level of interoperability are generally available. However, nowadays, interoperability of IoT nodes is still an open research issue because of the other two layers. In this paper,we propose a new method to achieve interoperability based on the characteristics of the IoT system, the "Interoperability Framework for IoT based on Metadata".Firstly, the research status of IoT interoperability research and analysis are analyzed, the characteristics and generalities of methods for solving interoperability problems are introduced in detail.Meanwhile, the advantages and disadvantages are briefly analyzed. Finally, through the study of the definition of the Semantic Web of the World Wide Web Consortium(W3C),combined with the analysis of the characteristics of the IoT system and data, the metadata is finally selected as the basis for interoperability. The selection and definition of metadata are analyzed and designed in this paper, finally, the basic metadata format is designed and provides a unified method for adding semantic information to various resources on the Internet of Things. This approach can help achieve semantic interoperability. Moreover,in order to verify the feasibility of the framework,a simple IoT platform was built and a case study of smart home applications(heater control)was implemented. The experimental results show that the proposed method combined with custom rules can add semantic data into the raw data and fulfil remote control automatically, this proves the existence of semantic interoperability.
