With the fast adoption of LTE and IEEE 802.11N,in order to increase the maximum data rate of a system and to make the communication link more reliable most of the devices are employing multiple antennas.Traditionally, fixed antennas are used in such devices.Nowadays, reconfigurable antenna are designed for the purpose of further increase the performance, which maintain or exceeds the performance of fixed antenna, and by changing their radiation characteristics can adopt to changing wireless channel. This thesis is about study the possibility of increase in performance by the use of pattern reconfigurable antennas as receivers.Firstly the performance potential was estimated using simulations, and then represented using two ESPAR verses pair of monopole antennas on BER(bit error rate)testbed. This thesis mainly focused on study about potential performance gains with pattern reconfigurable antennas in the multi-antenna system, and represented in real-world measurements, favorable performance increases over equivalent system with an Omni-directional antenna. For an effective demonstration, two ESPAR antennas were designed, fabricated and evaluated on a hardware BER testbed, and both the captured BER curves as well as the computed channel capacity indicated the superiority of the ESPAR antennas over a pair of monopoles in a multipath-rich indoor environment.Reconfigurable antennas have been a common area of research for MIMO related applications, and pattern reconfigurable antennas have received considerable attention.Even though channel measurements had shown capacity improvements with novel pattern reconfigurable antennas in many cases while little work has been done in this field to study the performance impact in MIMO and the relationship between power and diversity gain, and their effects to increase the data throughput. This thesis investigated these issues and presented a noval analysis through both simulated and experimentally measured results.
