Wireless networks are characterized by numerous features,e.g.,quickmovements and unstable channels. These characteristics cause many challenges and limitations to QoS(Quality of Service)and security. From the perspective of communication quality, wireless networks face the challenges such as 1)packet loss caused by channel noise and network interference,2)delay and data loss of the transmission resulted from the channel congestion,3)transmission delay because of the large distance,4)decrease of QoS of wireless network owing to the highly dynamic topology and 5)lower throughput and transmission rate which are different from traditional wired networks. On the other hand, packets transmitted over a wireless network are highly insecure due to the open nature of the wireless medium. The best way to enhance security is to increase the strength of cryptography, which however will leads to serious delay, performance cost and increased cosumption of restrictive network resources. Therefore,a joint optimization approach is necessary to coordinate the contradicted aim between QoS and security with respect to shared network resources. This paper aims to jointly optimize the anticipated QoS and security for intelligentizing communication decisions and security protection. We formulate a metric–effective channel utilizationto quantify the QoS by considering the wireless context factors like bit error rate, delay, bandwidth, etc. Moreover,we employ theconcept of security strength to evaluate wireless network security.Ratio of data and control fields is positively correlated with effective channel utilization but is negatively correlated with security strength. To this end,we model an objective utility, synthesizing the effective channel utilization and security strength by controlling the ratio of data and control fields. Thus we theoretically derive the optimal ratio of data and control fields for maximal objective utility.Extensive numerical calculations are conducted to explore the reaction of the optimal ratio against various combinations of the relevant parameters. The results show an approximate stable point available for various network conditions. This constant ratio of data and control fields can be viewed as a golden ratio in the invisible cyber world, like the well-known concept of the golden ratio in perceptual observations. The results also indicate that the proposed method can jointly optimize the effective channel utilization and security strength through controlling the ratio of data and control fields, which is expected to facilitate the design of new-emerging adaptive protocols.
