In 2010,Asian Americans had become the fastest-growing ethnic minority in the United States. As a group of people who have made outstanding achievements in various fields of economy, culture and political affairs in US,Asian Americans, however, are still suffering from serious racial discrimination and unjust treatment. In recent years, issues revealing racial discrimination against Asian Americans are frequently demonstrated by mass media, which has aroused a wide range of social concerns and public discussions. This thesis collects the New York Times news coverage of Asian Americans from 2013 to 2017 as the research object, aiming to analyze the media image of Asian Americans built by New York Times, and further explore the way that the Times generates news coverage about Asian Americans as well as the specific images of Asian Americans presented by the Times. This thesis is divided into six chapters. The first chapter introduces the study background, research object, status quo and significance. The second chapter is the research design, which introduces the theories and study method that adopted in this article, which includes "theory of framework","theory of discourse analysis" and"content analysis method".In this chapter, the method of choosing and collecting samples are also elaborated as the time span starts from January 1,2013 through December 31,2017.The third, fourth, fifth chapters share the key sections of this thesis, focusing on the analysis and interpretation of 125 coverage about Asian Americans in the New York Times during 2013-2017 from three perspectives. The third chapter applies the content analysis to discuss the quantity, layout, genre of the news coverage,as well as the Asian ethnics and the news themes involved. The fourth chapter employs the framework theory to analyze the high-level subject framework and the low-level image framework. The fifth chapter picks the case of an Asian police officer Pete Liang as a typical negative coverage from 125 samples with the theory of discourse analysis, discussing the overview, plot, consequence and comment within the news category.By summarizing the findings of 125 news samples analysis from Chapter three, four and five,Chapter Six points out the findings and limitations of this thesis. Moreover,Chapter Six has some revelations on the work of international communication, improving Chinese international image, and breaking the western world to Chinese stereotype. The study finds out that the news of Asian Americans presented by the New York Times shows a significant negative trend as obvious stereotypes and racial discrimination against Asian Americans are appeared in media coverage where Asian Americans are sketched as one-side image.Overall, the media image of Asian Americans presented by the New York Times obviously repeated is that "Asian Americans are reticent and not good at voicing their opinions."This thesis conducts a systematic study on the media images of Asian Americans presented by the New York Times, and to a certain degree complements the study of Asian Americans in the field of journalism and communication. Most importantly, the stiffed media images and stereotypes will.go against achievement of understanding and communication among various races, and will also impede intercultural communication in today's diversified world. Therefore, the development of audience awareness towards the media image of Asian Americans and the reduction of the impact of stereotypes on Asian Americans is propitious to enhance the intercultural communication and minimize unnecessary misunderstandings and conflicts among races.
