The rapid development of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language(TCFL)requires continued effort in improving its quality and efficiency.Therefore,how to improve the effectiveness of TCFL has become a topic worthy of note.Effective TCFL refers to a teaching activity targeted at offering students better language skills with minimal teaching input.On the basis of Effective Teaching Theory and the laws of Chinese teaching,Effective TCFL follows the rules of second language teaching,and adopts proper teaching methods in accordance with students' characteristics.In the practice of TCFL,teachers' activities and students' progress are to be viewed from the perspective of Effective TCFL.This article is based on the author's nearly one year of teaching practice at Bayanihan Institute in the Philippines.The factors that affect effective Chinese language teaching in Chinese schools in the Philippines are discussed through questionnaire,interview and classroom observation,as well as analysis of Chinese students and teachers,combined with the current situation of Chinese teaching in the country.Finally,the author offers suggestions on enhancing effectiveness of Chinese teaching in Chinese schools in the Philippines.The thesis consists of six chapters.Chapter One deals with the background and significance of the study,methodology and literature review.Chapter Two presents relevant theories on TCFL and Effective Teaching,including related concepts,characteristics,requirement,and assessment.Chapter Three introduces research methodology,surveys and interviews to examine teachers' and students' perception in Effective Teaching of Chinese at Bayanihan Institute.In this chapter,by means of classroom observation,the author offers typical examples of Chinese teaching practice,and pinpoints the problems from Effective Teaching perspective.Chapter Four analyzes factors that influence Chinese teaching at the Filipino schools,regarding students,teachers and other aspects.The last chapter concludes the entire study and suggests that for the purpose of promoting Effective Teaching of Chinese at Filipino schools,teachers should improve comprehensive teaching skills.Meanwhile,it is imperative for teachers to develop cross-cultural ability and reflect on their teaching practice in order to engage students in learning Chinese and increase Effective Teaching.Besides,from a managerial perspective,Chinese schools at Philippines should be provided with more support.The final chapter also points out limitations of the study and makes recommendations for the future research.
