A Case Study Research On Online One-to-one Tutor Identity In A Tutoring Institution

Shadow education has continued to develop in the wave of education marketization,and online education has increased significantly driven by education informatization.Online oneto-one tutors have emerged in the era of change.Because online one-to-one tutors have a short time and rapid development,there are few researches on this group.Identity is related to the professional development and career stability of online one-to-one tutors,and even affects the orderly development of the whole education ecology.Therefore,online one-to-one tutor identity has become a research topic of theoretical and practical significance.This study focuses on online one-to-one tutor identity,follows qualitative research orientation and adopts case study strategy.Firstly,I comb the research of shadow education,online education and identity.Secondly,I select the identity theory under the sociological perspective as the theoretical perspective and clarifies the core concept,conceptual framework and analytical framework.Finally,an online one-to-one training institution is chosen as the research place.Taking the online one-to-one tutors in the institution as cases,the data are collected by using in-depth interview and observation methods,and the research on the identity of online one-to-one tutor is placed in its social environment,work field and individual characteristics of self,focusing on two aspects research questions: first,what kind of online one-to-one tutor identity is;second,what factors affect online one-to-one tutor identity.Through in-depth interviews with 25 tutors,6 managers of the training institution,4 parents and 4 students,as well as analysis of other relevant materials,this study presents the case of online one-to-one tutors and their work field and social environment.There are three main conclusions.First,the online one-to-one tutor group shows the characteristics of being young,highly educated,professional diversity,high mobility,wide sources,low level of famous tutors and standardized tutors,which maximizes the benefits of training institutions,parents and tutors in the education market.Second,online one-to-one tutor identity will change with the different subjects,and different tutor individuals will also show different perception of identity when facing the same subject.Online one-to-one tutors,through dialogues with training institutions,parents,students and themselves,construct multiple identities of employees,service providers,topic tutors and hard-working people.Third,online one-to-one tutor identity is temporary,unstable,contradictory and dynamic.Fourth,influenced by individual factors,training institutions and other subjects,as well as social environment,online one-to-one tutors will make adaptive response to the environment,and their identity shows obvious differences in the process of construction.Micro factors:(1)individual characteristics;(2)adult rationality;(3)sense of professional achievement;(4)sense of professional belonging;(5)sense of professional security.Meso factors:(1)business values,organizational culture,working environment and organizational support;(2)interaction with family,friends,parents,students,other employees and informal organizations.Macro factors:(1)the economic environment including the level of wage income,the prospect of online shadow education,and the demand for private supplementary tutoring;(2)the cultural environment including the personalized concept of employment and the business idea of interest exchange;(3)the policy environment including the current standardized shadow education and the online education encouraging development.Based on the above research conclusions,this study further analyzes the impact of online one-to-one tutor identity,provides countermeasures and suggestions for training institutions and government management departments,and also has reference value for the future research of online shadow education and tutors.
