At the beginning of the 21 st century,a group of western scholars led by Elias g.Carayannis and David f.j.Campbell proposed and gradually improved the theoretical system of mode 3 knowledge production on the basis of in-depth analysis of the new trend of knowledge production, providing a new research paradigm for the discussion of knowledge and innovation in the 21 st century.Since the beginning of the 21 st century, the Chinese government has attached great importance to the development of collaborative innovation in colleges and universities, and has actively promoted the development of collaborative innovation in universities from a strategic perspective. With the development of information technology and the transformation of knowledge production mode, the practice of collaborative innovation in universities is no longer limited to the traditional mode 2,triple helix model and cooperation between industry, university and research institute.Interdisciplinary research, quadruple helix, knowledge clusters and innovation networks are gradually being incorporated into the field of collaborative innovation. The practice, scope and approach of collaborative innovation in universities also have a broader space than before. The development of collaborative innovation in China's colleges and universities is still in its infancy to a certain extent. It still needs to be improved in terms of theory, practical methods and approaches, and it is necessary to learn from foreign development experience. As one of the world's leading universities,RWTH Aachen University actively builds multi-level,multi-node,multi-modal,multilaterally interactive knowledge clusters and innovation networks in collaborative innovation, and promotes interdisciplinary,cross-disciplinary and inter-agency collaboration.Efforts to solve the development problems of the real society have achieved brilliant achievements in the practice of collaborative innovation, and its successful experience is worth learning. In this study, literature review method and case study method are adopted to comprehensively analyze the collaborative innovation of RWTH Aachen University from the perspective of mode 3.Firstly,the concepts and theoretical foundations of mode 3 and collaborative innovation of universities are described, and the core connotations of collaborative innovation, university collaborative innovation and mode 3 are defined.Secondly, from the perspective of knowledge cluster and innovation network of the mode 3 theory, this paper analyzed the collaborative innovation practice of RWTH Aachen University, analyzed the multi-dimensional aggregation of knowledge clusters and innovation networks,multi-model innovation matrix of adaptive integration and co-evolution,the multi-node pattern of fractal isomorphism, the multi-subject structure of quadruple helix and so on.Finally, based on the successful experience of RWTH Aachen University's collaborative innovation and the problems of collaborative innovation in China's universities, such as the construction of knowledge clusters has not received widespread attention, the types of collaborative innovation networks need to be enriched, and the construction of collaborative innovation ecosystems must be strengthened. This paper summarizes some enlightenments on the collaborative innovation of universities in China,as follows: to increase the construction of knowledge clusters in colleges and universities,to form a multi-level,multilaterally interactive cross-departmental collaborative innovation networks, and to improve the collaborative innovation ecosystem of China's universities. This thesis strives to to find a path suitable for the collaborative innovation of China's colleges and universities, and lay a good foundation for further inspiring the innovation vitality of colleges and universities and accelerating the construction of “double first-class”.
