Since the large-scale expansion of university enrollment at the end of last century,my country's higher education has developed vigorously and its scale has become the world's largest.However,while the university is developing rapidly,the positioning of the university as a whole shows a significant assimilation phenomenon.University positioning is the logical starting point of university running and development.The phenomenon of widespread assimilation appears in university positioning will be extremely unfavorable for universities to enhance their core competitiveness and specialize in running schools.It will affect the popularization and connotative development of higher education,result in the university's main functions of talent training,scientific research and social services are not compatible with the needs of economic and social development,which in turn affects the country's realization of "Two 100-year goals" and "Chinese Dream".This article first sorts out and summarizes the related research around the two core concepts of "social network analysis" and "university positioning".This article first sorts out and summarizes the relevant research around the two core concepts of "social network analysis" and "university positioning".Combining previous research and personal understanding,the core concepts of university positioning and assimilation are clearly defined,and the same time introduces the main concepts involved in social network analysis in the following text.By combing the development process and content of the new institutionalism in organizational sociology,it analyzes and summarizes the applicability and value of the theory in this study.The university is a special non-profit social organization specializing in education.New institutionalism can provide a complete framework for the analysis and interpretation of university behavior.Then this article theoretically explains the importance of university positioning and the main principles that universities should follow when positioning,it provides a reference basis for judging whether the positioning of universities at different levels is appropriate.This article takes all current universities with undergraduates level in China asthe research object.Based on the "2019 List of National Higher Education Institutions",obtained positioning texts by searching for the official website of each university,the university constitution and various planning texts.Then universities are divided into levels and categories,and split the positioning content into individual keywords,finally use social network analysis methods for visualization and central analysis.According to the analysis results,it is concluded that: the positioning of universities in China shows a high degree of convergence;the positioning of universities at the same level and in the same category is significantly convergent;some universities,especially local universities,are highly positioned;there are a large proportion of universities with problems of missing positioning and ambiguity.From the perspective of the new institutionalism of organizational sociology,with its core point of view,the institutional environment will significantly affect social organizational structure,organizational choice,and organizational behavior.Therefore,the institutional environment in which university organizations are located will also converge the positioning of universities.By decomposing the external institutional environment faced by universities,it is concluded that the institutional environment factors faced by university organizations mainly include university administrative management systems,higher resource allocation methods,higher education quality evaluation systems,and traditional elite university concepts.The main factors contributing to the convergence of university positioning include the rigidity of the university's administrative management system,the improper allocation of higher education resources,the single higher education quality evaluation system,and the influence of traditional elite education concepts.In view of the above-mentioned problems,suggestions are put forward to change the university administrative management system,adjust the way of higher education resource allocation,establish diversified higher education quality evaluation standards,form a higher education community awareness,and change the old elite education concept.
