The Influence Of Sibling Relationship On The Social Development Of Young Children: The Mediating Role Of Parenting Style

The family is the main activity place for young children.The social development of young children starts with the interaction with family members.On the one hand,the parenting style takes the parent-child relationship as the medium,parents subtly guides and shapes children in the interaction with children.On the other hand,sibling relationship is the mandatory emotional tendency relationship that lasts the longest in an individual's life.It is a model for children to establish interpersonal relationship with others,children promote their social development in the interaction with their sibling such as playing and learning.This study takes the sibling relationship as the entry point,and takes non-only children and their parents in the middle and large classes as research objects.First,the English version of the Questionnaire on Sibling Relationship is revised as the measurement tool of the sibling relationship to investigate the characteristics and differences of the sibling relationship.Then,the mediating effect of parenting style on the influence of sibling relationship on the social development of children was discussed by means of measurement method and questionnaire method.The main findings of this study are as follows:(1)On the whole,sibling relationship is closer than sibling conflict and relative status,with significant differences in all three dimensions.Girls were more likely to have intimacy and boys were more likely to have conflict behaviors,Siblings of the same sex group have closer relationships.Siblings with a age difference of 3 years or less had high intimacy and high conflict.The first child is in the dominant position,the second child is in the dominanted position;The relative status of sibling with age difference of 3 years or less is obviously differentiated.(2)The social development level of children is above the average level on the whole,without significant differences,but there are significant differences in some dimensions.Girls are better than boys in the four dimensions of abiding by social rules,will,self-concept,empathy and helping others,while boys are better than girls in the two dimensions of aggression and competitiveness.The first-place children were more competitive,the second-place children had better living habits,better quality of peer relations,more aggressive behaviors,less empathy,and less helpful behaviors.Big class children are more aggressive,middle class children are moreattached to their families,living habits are better.(3)Fathers are more likely to spoil their children than mothers,and mothers are more likely to have inconsistent educational requirements than fathers;parents often adopt laissez-faire styles parenting for girls.The younger the parents are,the more likely they are to choose democratic and inconsistent parenting styles,and the older the parents are,the more likely they are to choose laissez-faire and permissive parenting styles.Parents with high educational level were more willing to adopt democratic parenting styles,but they also chose inconsistent parenting styles.Parents with low educational level are more willing to adopt permissive,laissez-faire and authoritarian parenting style.(4)There is a significant positive correlation between sibling intimacy,sibling relative status and young children's social development,but the correlation between the social development of young children and the sibling conflict is not significant.Sibling intimacy has a significant positive predictive effect on young children's social development.(5)There is a significant positive correlation between the democratic parenting style and the social development of young children,there is a significant negative correlation between spoiled parenting style and laissez-faire parenting style and social development,the democratic parenting style has a significant positive predictive effect on the social development of young children.(6)On the influence of sibling intimacy on social development,the mediating effect of democratic and laissefaire parenting styles is significant.On the influence of the relative status of sibling relationship on the social development,the completely mediating effect of democratic parenting style is significant,while that of laisseuse parenting style is significant.
