Traditional folk paper-cut art is widely regarded as an excellent representative of Chinas intangible cultural heritage, and it also forms an important part of our traditional culture.Wisdom of Chinese people, and their expectation of a better life for centuries, have embodied in the folk paper-cut art. However, due to paper's fragile nature,as well as the art's isolation from the modern lifestyle, folk paper-cut art has been undervalued for decades. In recent years, several provinces and cities have formed programs introducing the folk paper-cut art and other forms of intangible cultural heritage to younger generations, which shows efforts to promote the inheritance and the development of folk paper-cut art.Through the activities of bringing the paper-cut art into classroom, students could enhance their understanding of Chinese traditional culture, learn practical skills, and have their thinking capacity trained.Meanwhile, however, the instructors have met a series of practical difficulties. Therefore,on the basis of the current literature and practice, this Paper provides an overview of the problems in activities of introducing the paper-cut art into classroom and the reasons behind.By questionnaires, surveys of student works, and interviews, this Paper also tries to find the teaching strategies and methods most conform to the features of the folk paper-cut art. This Paper is divided into three parts:First,Origin of the Folk Paper-cut Art and its Devolvement: The first part introduces the origin of elements and patterns of the folk paper-cut art.It shows that the folk paper-cut is derived from the collected observation of Chinese people of their daily life, and it expresses the laboring people's wishes of good life. The paper-cut art's close connection with life not only shows the origin of the art,but illustrates its unique charm as a form of art.Second,Overview of the Activities of “Introducing Paper-cut Art into Classroom,” and the Practical Problems: Based on surveys of works of students from a variety of schools and age groups,we discover that current student paper-cut works fail to inherit the unique features from the traditional folk paper-cut art. They also largely deviate from the traditional methods, and,in making the first draft, incorporates methods commonly used in the black-and-white decorating paintings and woodblock prints and other forms of painting. These practices destroy the originality of the paper-cut art as a distinctive form of art.Third,Teaching Strategies in the Activities of “Introducing Paper-cut Art into Classroom:” The major purpose of this Paper is to come up with practical strategies in help students create works conform to the artistic rules of the paper-cut art.Based on the artistic features of the traditional paper-cut art,we consider what kinds of strategies could preserve the traditional culture embodied in this form of art and which forms its cultural basis,on the one hand, and encourage the absorption of elements from other forms of painting,on the other hand.
