In recent years, with the rapid development of social media, people are increasingly inseparable from social media such as WeChat and Weibo for social, entertainment and information acquisition. As frequent users of social media, college students use it to entertain themselves and share their lives. However, social media has also slowly affected their studies and life to a certain extent. The excessive use of social media and academic procrastination among contemporary college students are relatively common phenomena. This study takes college students as the research object and uses the theory of Uses and Gratification as the theoretical basis to explore the theoretical relationship between social media motivation and academic procrastination. The study mainly used questionnaire survey methods combined with in-depth interviews, and took 326 students as the research object.Based on the five needs from the Uses and Gratification theory, combined with the characteristics of college students and social media, the social media motivations are measured from four dimensions in this study, namely information motivation, entertainment motivation, escapism motivation and selfpresentation motivation. The academic procrastination is divided into three dimensions according to the coerciveness and autonomous nature of academic tasks: completion of the assignment, preparing for exams and autonomous learning. The results of the study show that different degrees of procrastination will be encountered when facing different learning tasks.Among them, the coerciveness of the academic tasks have a very important impact. The more mandatory the academic, the less procrastination is happening, while for autonomous learning, college students show a higher degree of procrastination. The motivation of social media use for entertainment and escapism has a positive effect on academic procrastination, while information and self-presentation motivation have a negative effect. This study also found that the demographic characteristics of college students such as gender, grade and major have a strong correlation with the motivation of college students to use social media. In the end, this study explores how to reduce the academic procrastination by improving the social media literacy of college students.
