Approaches Assisting Education Research Competence Of Beginning Teachers In Basic Schools

The beginning five years of teacher's career is the key period for the development of education researching competency and for the formation of teaching habits in basic schools.Here,taking teachers from Luhe district,Nanjing City as a case,we studied the status of teachers9 education research,and conducted empirical researches with different objects including beginning teachers,the“Education research community,in Luhe,and a basic school,and our aims were to:1)explore the approaches to facilitate the development of education research competency of teachers in basic schools;and 2)provide suggestions for governments and schools to improve their policies for guiding teachers conducting education researches.Main results are:By literature research,we found that all governments of the main countries around the world highly valued education research of teachers in basic schools.The main approaches for cultivating teachers' education research competency in basic schools including:1)teacher education and academic education;2)school-based training;3)basic school-university collaboration;and 4)organizing and running "Education research community".Currently,the atmosphere of“teachers are researchers,has been former,while this atmosphere is still need to be promoted.We recalled 428 valid questionnaires among the 548 beginning teachers(onboarding year from 2012 to 2016)in Luhe.We found that it is very urgent to raising their enthusiasm and ensure their time on education research.There were 46%beginning teachers spend<1 hour for reading teaching professional journal or educational articles;11%of them thought that the most important factor blocking their enthusiasm of conducting education research is the lack of supervision and incentives;40%of them fail to ensure their time for conducting education researches.Among the 428 teachers providing valid questionnaires,45%of them expecting more training or instruct on education research;about 20%were not good at determining the topic of education research.Academic education showed low efficacy on developing their competency for conducting education researches;thus we suggest that the academic education for basic school teachers should highlight the training on education research.Team works of class observation and discussions should good efficacy on facilitating their competence of education research.The surveyed beginning teachers showed various grouping patterns on education research according to differences on discipline,teaching section,pluralism and workload;and thus need different training and encouraging strategies.Therefore,carrying out different systematical training on education research for different groups of beginning teachers is very important.We recalled 277 valid questionnaires from the beginning teachers with onboarding year from 2012 to 2016)in Luhe_We found that the local ieEducation research community,did showed good efficacy of facilitating the development of education research of community members.With one year longer of membership,the beginning teachers showed significant advantages on the 14 indices of education research achievement,in particular on those indices referring to city level and above.Therefore,the organizing and running mechanisms of“Education research community,should be kept and further developed.Taking a basic school in Luhe as a case study,we explore the effective policies for guiding teachers conducting education researches.We found that policies such as"master-apprentice pair project","fellow cooperation story team,and "teachers forum"showed good efficacy of facilitating the education research of beginning teachers.
