School alienation is a type of alienation,which refers to students' discomfort in the school environment and interpersonal interaction,which leads to the loss of their own sense of value,depression,and negative experiences such as decreased interest in learning.In previous studies,school alienation is often regarded as an important factor influencing students' dropout and study weariness,which has attracted the attention of researchers.This study explores the relationship between parent-child cohesion and the school alienation of middle school students and introduces the imaginary audience as a mediating variable to explore the relationship between the three,in order to provide feasibility suggestions for preventing and alleviating the school alienation of middle school students.Totally 1391 middle school students from Luoyang City investigated with Middle School Student Alienation Questionnaire(MSSAQ),Parent-child Cohesion Questionnaire(PCCQ)and Imaginary Audience Scale(IAS)in this study.This study analyzed the relationship between parent-child cohesion,imaginary audience and school alienation of middle school students and discussed the mediating effect of imaginary audience between parent-child cohesion and school alienation.The conclusions are as follows:(1)The school alienation of middle school students was at the below average level.From the five sub-dimensions,middle school students experienced the strongest meaninglessness.There were significant differences in grade in the total score of school alienation and the five dimensions of normlessness,aloneness,meaninglessness,discomfort,and self-alienation among middle school students.There were significant differences in family type in the total score of school alienation,aloneness,meaninglessness and self-alienation among middle school students.The normlessness dimension of middle school students' school alienation differed significantly in gender,location of household registration and only-child or not.(2)The overall condition of parent-child cohesion of middle school students was good and it was at the above average level.The degree of cohesion between middle school students and their mothers was higher than that between them and their fathers.The degree of cohesion between middle school students and their fathers differed significantly in gender.In terms of grade and family type,there were significant difference in parent-child cohesion of middle school students.(3)The imaginary audience of middle school students was at the above average level.The imaginary audience of middle school students had significant differences in gender,grade and only-child or not.(4)Middle school students' parent-child cohesion was significantly negatively correlated with school alienation.Middle school students' parent-child cohesion was significantly negatively correlated with imaginary audience.Middle school students' imaginary audience was significantly positively correlated with school alienation.(5)After controlling the grade and family type,parent-child cohesion can directly affect the school alienation of middle school students,and indirectly affect the school alienation of middle school students by affecting the imaginary audience.Compared with the mother-child cohesion,the level of middle school students' father-child cohesion had greater impact on their school alienation.Based on the results of this study,the following educational strategies are proposed:(1)Guide middle school students to correct their learning attitudes,enhance their motivation to learn and reduce their meaninglessness.(2)Based on the differences of middle school students' school alienation in terms of gender,grade,location of household registration,only-child or not and family type,they are classified and guided.(3)Parents should pay more attention to constructing positive parenting methods and actively take part in the growth of their children.In particular,fathers should bear more parenting responsibilities and improve the parent-child cohesion of middle school students.(4)Build a good parent-child relationship and guide middle school students to judge themselves objectively.Encourage them to participate extensively in social life practices and reduce the imaginary audience level of middle school students.
