With the popularization of the concept of lifelong education and the increase of leisure time for the elderly,more and more elderly people choose to participate in educational activities to enrich their later life.The participation of the elderly in educational activities can help delay mental decline,promote the activation of mental power;learn new skills,adapt to new roles;promote social participation,avoid social isolation;develop positive emotions,and have a happy old age life.In this study,based on the method of factor analysis and motivation scale of educational participation designed by Boshier,motivation scale of educational participation of the elderly was established and Self-identity scale was revised.Through the questionnaire survey,motivation of educational participation and the relationship between it and self-identity of elder people were revealed.This study draws the following conclusions:1.The motivation of participation in education for the elderly can be divided into six motivational orientations,from high to low: cognitive interest,quality of life,social contact,social services,improve the families and escape/stimulation.2.The total score of self-identity of the elderly participating in educational activities is generally high,and the scores of each dimension are from high to low: self level,others level,and social level.3.The motivation of participation in education for the elderly is significantly different in terms of gender,age,and the time of educational participation.Women's educational participation motivation is significantly higher than that of men's.In the 60-79 age range,with the increase of age,the motivation of educational participation is gradually increasing.At the age of 80,the motivation for educational participation begin to reduce.With the increase of time of educational participation,the motivation of educational participation Gradually enhanced.There is no significant difference in the motivation of participation in education for the elderly in terms of residence patterns,education,income levels,and pre-retirement occupational standards.4.The motivation of participation in education for the elderly is significantly related to self-identity.There are some motivations of educational participation are significantly positively correlated with the sense of self-identity and each dimension,which are cognitive interest,quality of life,social contact,social services,improve the families.Escape/stimulation motivation is not related to self-identity and its dimensions.5.Self-identity of the elderly has a significant positive predictive power for educational participation motivation.According to the research conclusions,the old-age educational institutions should set up courses the elderly want to learn,create social scenes for learning,innovate teaching methods,and encourage the development of learning teams.the elderly should enhance their sense of self-identity.Through these measures,the results of stimulating and sustaining the motivation of educational participation are achieved.
