In recent years, as outdoor activities booming in our country, bicycling, as a new way of exercise, is gradually flourishing in China. On one hand, bicycling has the traditional impacts of exercise including body-building and mental pleasure; on the other hand, its unique features such as nature-orientation, full of adventure and fashion can satisfy different physiological need of participants. Meanwhile, bicycling clubs in colleges and universities spring up like mushrooms which promote bicycling development. According to incomplete statistics, among colleges and universities, students bicycling clubs are over500and this number is continuing to grow. As the most active and fresh bicycling groups, they have enlarged the groups of cyclers and have promoted and enhanced bicycling culture as well. In this process, college bicycling clubs have attracted, cultivated and output a large number of bicycling amateurs, becoming an important force to promote cultural development and activities of bicycling in China at moment. With the guidance of bicycling clubs in colleges and universities, more and more students benefit from bicycling to maintain mental health and to get improvement in psychology, physiology, social interaction and even aesthetics. In addition, they form their self-identity through self-reorganization, self-reflection and interaction with people and environment by bicycling.Based on theories of psychology, sociology, sociology of sports, social psychology, analysis of previous studies and documents, as well as features of bicycling, this paper studies the relationship between participation motivation and self-identity of college cyclers in Beijing through self-designed questionnaires. SPSS are used to analyze the322qualified samples, getting the following conclusions: (1) Major participation motivations for college cyclers include body-building, social interaction, relaxation, project features, entertainment and adventure, self-improvement, self-learning and development, self-expression, competition and achievement, among which body-building ranks the top.(2) Gender differences are obvious in participation motivation of college bicycling activities. Male and female participants have large differences in six factors of self-expression, self-improvement, entertainment and adventure, relaxation, competition and achievement and self-learning and development. According to the average result of participation motivation, male cyclers are more motivated by self-expression, competition and achievement, self-improvement, entertainment and adventure, self-learning and development, body-building, as well as project features than female ones. Female cyclers are more motivated by social interaction and relaxation than male cyclers, In addition, there are huge differences in participation motivation for college cyclers from different grades and regions.(3) Participation behavior of college cyclers shows relatively large randomness."Participation frequency" and "organization forms" are inclined to free combination.(4) Gender features have impacts on bicycling participants. Male cyclers are more active, tending to long-time and high-frequent exercise, while female are more passive in these activities.(5) In terms of relationship between participation motivation of college cyclers and their behaviors, the former one has impact on the latter.(6) Self-identity of college cyclers should be further developed and improved.
