Research On The Present Situation Of College Students' Sense Of Life Meaning In Science And Engineering Colleges And Universities

The sense of Life Meaning refers to the individual's cognition of self-existence,the pursuit of life goals and the experience of life process.It includes three dimensions: cognition,motivation and emotion.In recent years,self-injury and even suicide incidents of college students have been frequently reported in newspapers.It is also common for college students to play truant,act diffusely,live aimlessly and pursue “Depression culture”.These facts reflect that some college students have problems in their understanding of life.At the same time,the voice of life education is increasingly strong.People hope that through education,college students will realize life value,so as to respect life,cherish life and realize their life value.Science and Engineering colleges and universities have their particularity in the source of students,curriculum settings,campus atmosphere and so on.This study discusses the meaning of life and life education of college students from Science and Engineering colleges and universities at the present stage,in order to provide the theoretical basis for improving life education of college students.Firstly,the author conducts a questionnaire surrey on college students at this university to acquire a understanding of their sense level about the meaning of life,then,uses interviews to supplement the questionnaire survey.This study adopts the “Life sense scale of college students” compiled by Liang Jinlong and others,which includes three dimensions: Freedom of Will,Will to Meaning and the Meaning of Life.The results of the study are as follows:1.The overall level of the sense of life meaning of college students in science and engineering is not high,whose motivations to the pursuit of life goals is insufficient.2.There are significant gender differences in the perception of meaning in life among college students of science and engineering.Female students' total score of the perception of meaning in life g and the level of each dimension are higher than that of male students.3.The perception of meaning in life among university students of science and engineering varies from the major difference.In the dimension of Will to Meaning,students majoring in Liberal Arts and Medical Science have stronger motivation in pursuing life goals than students majoring in Science and Engineering,and Science students have the lowest level in this dimension.4.Differences in the perception of meaning in life among university students of science and Engineering also reflected in different grades.In the dimension of Freedom of Will,the scores of sophomores and juniors are significantly higher than those of seniors.5.Differences in the perception of meaning in life among university students of Science and Engineering can be found in terms of college club participation.In the dimension of Will to Meaning,the scores of college students who participate in or hold important positions in college clubs and associations are observably higher than those who do not participate in any clubs and associations.Based on interviews,this study analyzes the internal and external factors that affect the perception of meaning in life of college students,and puts forward some suggestions for the development of life education at polytechnic colleges and universities,including: facing the reality,paying attention to the level of the perception of meaning in life of college students;seizing opportunities to carry out life education among college students;popularizing psychological knowledge and strengthening college students ' ability of self-regulation building student-oriented life education atmospheres at colleges;taking multiple measures to innovate the form of life education.
