The basic skills of orienteering are the ability to understand and use maps.As a carrier of spatial information, maps are of great significances to the developments of children's spatial cognition and spatial thinking;it is also of great help for children's livesto understand and use maps. The purposes of this study are to describe the developmental characteristics of the basic skills of senior kindergarten orienteering by exploringits current situations, and to provide feasible suggestions for the education practice related to the orienteering in kindergartens by carrying out educational interventions through the design of thematic activities and regional activities. In this study,60 children from two seniorclasses in A kindergarten were selected for observations and analysis. The methods used in this study included experimental methods, structural interview methods and observation methods. The main methods of the research on the basic skills of senior kindergarten orienteering: investigating the status of children's understanding of map symbols and map informationthrough interviews;exploring the senior kindergarten children's abilities to use the map in the class and outdoor simple maze by setting missions, finding target points and planing the routes. The study carried out the educational interventions and analyzed its effects starting from the current situations of the basic skills of Orienteering in senior classes. The results show that the ability to understand the map functions is accurate for most senior kindergarten children, but the understandings of map category, markers and orientationsare limited. From the point of the ability to use maps, there are no gender differences in the ability to usemaps.Landmarks and topological relations play important roles in orienteering for children. It is easy for children to soliloquize and they are prone to problems in the observation of azimuth. From the results of intervention, the ability of children to use maps has been greatly improved after the intervention, and the use of maps in the experimental group is significantly better than that of the control group.
