Orienteering is an emerging healthy and intelligent sports programplacing equal emphasis on mental and physical development. The sports program whichis a well developed one in Europe where it has over100years of history is still in itsinfancy stage of promotion in China. Since it was introduced in China in1983,orienteering has been vigorously advocated by the State Ministry of Education, schoolsat all levels, sports communities, as well as surveying and mapping sector. A multitudeof sport events of increasing scale associated to orienteering is thriving in this country, indicating promising development prospect. Schools will be the carrier in the promotionof the further development of orienteering which shall be carried forward in threeaspects, namely popularization, competition and talent cultivation. In2012, the StateSports General Administration, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Scienceand Technology jointly issued the "Notification on Establishing National TechnologicalSports Pilot Schools", which was a three-year plan to create a number of traditionalschools with technological sports features, of which orienteering would be one of therecommended program, providing a superior platform for the development oforienteering. The training and coaching of orienteering is not yet professionalized or systemizedand the competitiveness of orienteering in China is still lagging behind from manyforeign countries, which, expect its specific features (such as: complex andever-changing competition program, difficult training techniques, professional drawingpreparation requirements, insufficient training drawing and other uncertainties), isactually caused by the lack of understanding of the skill system of this orienteering bytrainers and instructors, making professional and systematic coaching as well as theimprovement of players’ competitiveness impossible. The majority of our coaches whotaught themselves through participating in short-term training organized by OrienteeringAssociation and Chinese Student Orienteering Association, that explains why they lackof professional orienteering experience and acquire very little understanding ofprofessional orienteering technology structure. Books and researches in our country fororienteering and training guidance are far from sufficient and the orienteering skills andtraining translated and compiled by Song Yuansheng is one of the books professionallyand profoundly representing technique and training of orienteering. As competitivesports are brought to a new level, the application of orienteering is even more pragmatic, accurate and personalized. The importance of technology for the excellent resultsachieved is self-evident.This article applies the methods of literature, expert interviews, and logical interpretation in the analysis of orienteering training, sports competition and currentcompetitive level of this sport program.
