Research On The Postgraduates’ Study Engagement Infuenced By The Teaching Assistants’ Work

As an important part of award system,graduate students’ "three-assistance" policy is widely carried out in domestic universities.The teaching assistant job is a kind of"three-assistance",which refers to the special part-time job of the graduate students who are employed as teaching assistants and gets the corresponding remuneration.The teaching assistant’s jobs have positive meaning to the schools,the teachers and the graduate students.Specifically to the graduate students,what impact does the job have?This study takes the study engagement as the breakthrough point,investigates the study engagement of the teaching assistant group,and the influence of the related factors of the teaching assistants.The research takes NJAU as an example.We designe two questionnaires and take a semester as a cycle.Two questionnaires issue at the beginning and the ending of the semester.The study uses value-added evaluation,independent sample T test,single factor analysis of variance and regression analysis.The study obtains the basic situation,the value-added situation and the related factors of the teaching assistant job on the study engagement.The study is based on the five dimensions of study engagement,which are Level of Academic Challenge,Active and Collaborative Learning,Student-Faculty Interaction,Enriching Educational Experiences and Supportive Campus Environment.The results show that the graduate students’ study engagement at the general level.Student-Faculty Interaction and Supportive Campus Environment are higher than other dimensions.After doing the job,graduate students have value-added in study engagement.Level of Academic Challenge,Active and Collaborative Learning and Student-Faculty Interaction have a high value-added.Enriching Educational Experiences and Supportive Campus Environment add low value.The reason for the lower value may lie in:in the dimension of Enriching Educational Experiences,the frequency of graduate students’ participation in social practice,academic competition,qualifications certificate is lower than before;on the aspect of Supportive Campus Environment,graduates are not close enough to teachers and students in their job.In addition,there are differences between different disciplines,grades and source place.Graduates from the natural sciences,the first grade and the urban have higher value-added.The research discusses the influence of the related factors of teaching assistants job on the graduate students’ study engagement,from these percepts:relevance of job course and their professional,working time,working content,training and assessment.The results show that:under the different working time,different teaching assistants have significant differences,and the longer working time show the higher engagement.Graduates who do classroom teaching and experimental teaching as the main job have higher learning engagement.The group which has assessment shows higher learning engagement.The more related between the groups’ own professional and the course,the higher learning investment they get.Regression analysis shows that the working content and working time having the greatest impact on learning engagement.The influence coefficient of classroom teaching work is 0.277,while the working time influence coefficient is 0.019.According to the results,to improve the level of graduate students’ study engagement,this paper puts forward some suggestions from two aspects:the graduate student and the school.On the one hand,graduate students need to pay attention to strengthen their own study engagement,make learning and working plans,and participate in various educational activities actively.On the other hand,colleges and universities should aware students’ study engagement,especially pay attention to the low value group.Make different strategies for different groups.At the same time,combined with the related factors in teaching assistants management,standardize teaching assistant system in order to improve the study engagement of teaching assistants.
