With the great expansion of Chinese higher education,a dilemmatic situation has arisen,characteristic of the insufficient supply of creative talents and the oversupply of people with postgraduate education.Thus,the quality of postgraduate education has become the focus of both public and policy endeavors.Investigating the learning engagement experience of postgraduate students,is critical for ensuring the quality of postgraduate programs,and it is particularly important for the improvement of national competitiveness and students7 personal growth.The current study conducted an empirical investigation,collecting both quantitative and qualitative data using questionnaire surveys and semi-structured interviews national wide from postgraduate students.The current study attempted to address the following research questions:1.what is the overall situation of learning engagement among postgraduate students?2.what is the relationship between learning engagement and academic achievement?3.what factors may influence postgraduate students'learning engagement.The major findings of the current study are as follows:1.The overall level of learning engagement was above average.2.Gender differences in learning engagement are significant.Male students outperformed their female counterparts in learning engagement except for the indicator of effective teaching practice.3.Learning engagement is significantly influenced by the education background of participants'parents and their origin of birth.Generally,participants with well-educated parents and from the urban areas outperformed their counterparts.4.Academic achievement and the number of paper published were significantly influenced by learning engagement.5.Learning outcome and extent of satisfaction with the education experience assessment were significantly influenced by learning engagement.
