In recent years,the reform of teacher education in China has continued to advance,but practical teaching is still a weak link in the training of initial teachers.As the “leader” of teacher education reform,the Britain has been constantly exploring the practical teaching of initial teacher education.In 2011,the British government launched the “School Direct Programme”.It is the training path for initial teachers in the new century.This project runs through practical teaching and is a practice-based initial teacher training program.After several years of operation and development,the project has become the best-performing initial teacher training path in the Britain,no matter the number and quality of initial teachers,it is in the forefront of the Britain.How can this project achieve such results in practice,how does it work,and what are its characteristics? The research on these issues can provide a certain reference for the reform of initial teacher education,especially in practical teaching.The main content of this paper is composed of five parts.The introduction part describes the reason for the topic selection and significance of this paper,the difficulties to break through and the main research methods of innovation.It summarizes the relevant research and progress at home and abroad,and defines the concept of School Directed Programme in the paper writing.The first chapter begins with the tradition of practical teaching in the path of initial teacher education in Britain,the government’s emphasis on practical teaching of initial teacher education,and the influence of the world on the reform of initial teacher education since the Second World War.The second chapter introduces the elements of the Britain’s latest initial teacher education reform program,the School Directed Programme,the implementation process,and the more specific operations of the Farnham School in Surrey.It includes schools and students,use and distribution of funds,recruitment and selection,theory subject training courses,practical teaching and related courses,dual tutor counseling and assessment feedback,etc.The third chapter is a summary of the characteristics and effectiveness of the School Directed Programme.That is,strict access and screening criteria,attention to early adaptation and communication,spiraling guidance of instructors,rigorous and sound evaluation procedures,integrated cooperation between partner schools and universities,steady development of quality and quantity of teachers,and advantages of theoretical and practical courses.The fourth chapter is straight to the School Directed Programme thinking and enlightenment,it is concluded that universities and related training institutions as well as university teachers are affected,the tutor of the teaching school lacks the ability to train the main force in pre-service teachers and the implementation of the School Directed Programme lacks reflection on the teaching of theoretical knowledge.And put forward the suggestion of initial teacher education practice teaching reform in our country.For instance,improve the cooperative system and guarantee mechanism of partner schools,establish scientific practice teaching evaluation standard,cultivate initial teachers’ ability to reflect on teaching,provide a wide range of optional teaching skills training and play the role of dual tutors in practice.
