With the rapid development of digital technology, the amount of audio and video files collected by the archives of domestic colleges and universities increases steadily with each day passing by.Therefore,it has been a difficult problem in the colleges and universities on how to perform a long-term preservation and scientific management on these audio and video resources as well as how to provide sufficient service for users. The traditional management method of archives resources has been obviously not able to be suitable for current audio-visual archives management. We must put forward the new audio-visual archives resources management and service methods to ensure the smooth development of audio-visual archives.Firstly, this study understands the status of the management and service of audiovisual archives in various colleges and universities by the means of questionnaire survey. From the investigation data, find out that there are many problems in the audiovisual archives of colleges and universities in China at present, such as inadequate staffing, lagging overall collection work, imperfect management system function and inadequate development and utilization of audio and video resources. At the same time, analyze the demand of different kinds of people to the audio-visual archives.Basing on these issues and demands, this paper puts forward constructing audio-visual archives management platform to solve the series problem. On the other hand, the open source software DSpace is recommended to the small and medium archives in the colleges and universities with limited funding support to build a professional audiovisual archives management platform.DSpace is an open source software developed jointly by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Hewlett-Packard Company. This paper introduces the DSpace system specifically in three aspects: system characteristics, system architecture and the main functions of the system.Subsequently, the structure and function of the university sound and image archives management platform are designed according to certain design principles on the basis of fully understanding the needs of users, including the design of three functional modules of data submission, audit cataloging and publication, and utilization. Finally, through the example of the multimedia file management platform of Northeastern Normal University, the paper illustrates the strategies of sharing and utilizing by classification of the audio and video file resources by various users in colleges and universities.Hope to bring some changes on concept and ideas to the current audio and video archives management and service work through the establishment of the audiovisual archives management platform which based on DSpace,to improve the utilization ratio of the audio and video archives resources in colleges and universities and fully play the valuable role on audio-visual archives resources.
