| College students’ organizations are playing an essential role in building college students’ healthy life style and positive attitude. Most of college culture events and ideological and political education are hosted by college students’ organizations.Being a part of these organizations is a path that most of the college students would take to immerse themselves in college lives. It’s also a good way to improve the abilities of practice, organizing, coordinating and invoke the awareness of teamwork. However, the loss of the members of these organizations makes it hard to hold high quality events and maintain reputation and impact. This research aims to explore and understand the process of students’ dropping out from these organizations. The research is based on existing findings and experiments’ results. The following discussions are based on the observation of college Z in Beijing,China. The main methodology we applied to this research was the quality method. We had semi-structured interviews with 39 students from college Z in Beijing. We came to three main findings based on the analysis of the interview data.First of all, there are two specific periods of time during the whole process that more students decide to drop out from college students’ organizations.Second of all, each individual has different experiences dropping out from these organizations.Voluntary dropout and passive dropout are the two main types which could explain most of the cases. To understand voluntary dropouts,it is important to understand the decision-making process.Passive dropout is more about process of post dropping out mental adaptation. There are two models of voluntary dropout: linear and curvilinear. For linear voluntary dropping out behavior, there are different: the generating of the reason leading to final dropping out,the stimulation and final actions. For curvilinear dropouts, they experience stages of potentially generating the idea of dropping out the organizations, choosing between dropping out and stay, taking actions to drop out.Individuals who experience passive dropping out would most likely accumulate mental pressures at the beginning, then adapt to the situation, finally accept the fact.Last but not the least, the reasons behind why students dropping out from college students’ organizations are complex. There are differences between self-understanding and others’ comments. There are probably more than one reasons which lead to a specific member’s dropping out.According to the findings discussed above and ideological and political education practice,I make four suggestions on preventing college students’ organizations from losing more members and limit the damage generated by members’ dropping out.Firstly, providing proper guidance at the time that members are more easily to generate the idea of dropping out.Secondly, strengthen and improve the organization itself is a good way to preventing members from leaving.Thirdly, build or improve existing dropping out system to reduce the impact of members’ dropping out.Lastly, college advisors should take the responsibilities to help passive dropouts recover from the negative impact of dropping out. |
