Illustration is the most effective carrier of many chemical information,it can not only transfer a large number of chemical knowledge for students,but also can increase the students to understand and absorb the knowledge.It can also be used as a teaching tool,which can help students form better values while cultivating students'abilities.Along with the course reform,the textbook illustration research has been paid more and more attention.However,the comparative analysis of Chinese and American chemical textbook illustrations is insufficient.This paper adopts the text analysis and comparative research,takes PEP chemistry textbooks and Chemistry:concept and application of the American"scientific discoverer" high school as research object.And from textbook illustrations appearance features,the types of illustrations,illustrations way of expression,the collocation of illustrations,and other five dimensions of the analysis and comparison,with a view to the preparation of teaching illustrations and teachers to use illustrations to provide reference.Fingdings of this researchare as follows:There are some similarities between the illustrations of Chinese textbooks and those of American books.1.The number and proportion of illustrations used in Chinese and American textbooks are nearly the same,achieving a good harmony between pictures and words.2.In both Chinese and American textbooks there is a complete organization system of illustrations,including picture,the title of the picture and explanations of the picture.3.The types of illustrations used in both Chinese and American textbooks are quite various.Almost all kinds of illustrations are used.4.Colored illustrations are used in both Chinese and American textbooks so that it is no difficult to see the very details of pictures.5.Illustrations used in both Chinese and American textbooks include main bar and side bar.6.In terms the relations between pictures and texts around them,they all refer to the same theme in both Chinese and American textbooks.7.Creativity can be found in the combination of picture and texts.In textbooks of both countries,the new type of combination,in which the picture shows the situation while the texts gives hints,is used.8.Pictures tend to be intellectualized.Pictures are mainly applied to help students get a good graps of textbooks.9.Illustrations used in both Chinese and American textbooks meet demands of sylbus and teaching standard.l0.Illustrations in exercises use words like,"the following pictures',"pictures on the right ","the above pictures" torefer to the exact picture instead of the labeled number of picture.Characteristics of illustrations in Chinese textbooks:1.The spirit of humanity.Illustrations in Chinese textbooks applied the form of graph making it full of spirit of humanity.2.The application of concept map.In some chapters of Chinese textbooks,there are exer drawing concept map,which can include all knowledge point in this chapter.Characteristics of American textbooks:1.The pictures are colorful,of medium type and of high visibility.2.Explanatory words are used to make up a good combination of pictures and texts.Explanatory words in American textbooks fall into three kinds:explanatory words next to the explanatory words in the picture and explanatory words after Eglish letters.Explanatory next to the picture,are mainy theme of the picture,key concept in the picture,task picture with the form of short-line+noun.Explanatory words after Eglish letters further explanation key concepts or expanded knowledge in the picture.And furtherm important information in the picture.3.Question-driven illustrations focus on scientific inquiry.Illustrations are followed by kinds of questions in American textbooks.Shortcomings of illustrations in Chinese textbooks:1.Pictures are a bit dim,with small size and low visibility and are not placed next to the text.2.Explanatory words are not enough.3.There are too much verified pictures which only verify words and do little key points.4.Pictures and words are not well integrated.In terms of complicated words do not integrate important information into pictures.5.Illustrations of science history are not balanced,with the majority of portra few of procedures of scientific research.6.There is no background in some pictures of Chinese textbooks,making a which can not draw the attraction of readers.Shortcomings of illustrations in American textbooks:1.There is a shortage of illustrations about the history of chemistry in American.2.There is no background in some pictures of Chinese textbooks,making a which can not draw the attraction of readers.At last,based on the research results,the paper discusses the inspiration of the creation and application of illustrations in Chinese high school chemistry textbooks.The main implication of the textbook illustration is:(1)adjust the description of the illustrations;(2)arranging illustrations for after-school exercises;(3)replace obsolete illustrations in time.Teacher's inspiration when using illustrations:(1)Interest in the drawing;(2)Image and text are converted into each other;(3)Set up questions on the picture;(4)add text to the picture;(5)Bold innovation.
