A Study On Differences Between Selected Novel Texts In High School Compulsory Chinese Textbooks Published By People’s Education Press And Their Original Novels

The selected texts of Chinese textbooks are not always the original works of writers,since the original works are usually modified by textbook editors,especially for novels with long length.Thus,there are differences between the selected texts of Chinese textbooks and the original works in some degree.Attention and study on these differences is beneficial to promote the perfection and development of Chinese textbooks.As studies on one literary form in a set of textbook are very few now,this thesis focuses on the commonly used edition from People’s Education Press.It studies the differences between the selected novel texts of high school Chinese compulsory textbooks and their original works,analyze the modified situation on original novels and give advice to teachers and textbook editors.The main text of this thesis includes three chapters.The first chapter introduces the selected novel texts in high school compulsory Chinese textbooks published by People’s Education Press from two sides.Firstly,it introduces the edition of textbook and mainly explains the concrete reasons of choosing People’s Education Press edition and high school compulsory textbooks as the studying scope.Secondly,it introduces the main contents of selected novels and analyzes the editorial reasons of selected novels through internal and external comparison.The second chapter is the main part of this thesis,and it includes four sections.The first section introduces the differential situation of selected novel texts and the original works.Firstly,it compares the selected novel texts and their original works and counts the modified situation of original works through pie charts and tables.The modified situation is the reflection of differences.Then,it analyzes the differences based on the data of pie charts and tables.To be specific,there are three points:firstly,the modification is huge and both objects and methods of modification are in great numbers;secondly,the modification includes main texts and their annotation;thirdly,ancient novels,modern novels and foreign novels have their own modified characteristics.The second section analyzes the reasons of differences between selected novels and original novels.The reasons are as follows:words restriction of selected novels,tiny mistakes of language and need of practical teaching situation.And then it demonstrates them through concrete examples.The third section points out both reasonable and unreasonable parts of differences between selected texts of novels and their original works,and then explains the effect of referring to different kinds of translations on foreign novels’modification through examples.The fourth section points out the influence of differences between selected novel texts and original novels and confirms that their optimistic impact overrides passive impact.And then it brings three thought-provoking questions:firstly,how to avoid effect on students’ whole conception about novel plot,character image and artistic characteristics;secondly,how to respect the original novels when modifying the novel’s language;thirdly,how to judge if the novel’s real contents are swept under the carpet in name of protecting students.The third chapter puts forward some suggestions on dealing with the differences between selected novel texts and original novels from the perspectives of teachers and textbook editors.As to teachers,they could pay attention to original novels,use teaching methods such as comparison and reduction and make development and migration by referring original novels.As to textbook editors,they could examine the values of original novels,refer to expert’ opinions and pay more attention to teachers’ and students’feedback.
