In the day of implementing education for all-around development,it is significa-nt and urgent to cultivate students' awareness of environmental protection.As a new round of basic education curriculum reform is conducted,geography curric-ulum plays a crucial role in cultivating students' environmental awareness in the basic education stage.From the 1980 s,people began to frequently interfere wit h the environment,coupled with the change of global environment and its influence,the deterioration of the ecological environment became serious day by d-ay.Therefore,knowing the status and characteristics of environmental awareness of Tibetan high school students in Gannan Prefecture is greatly helpful for geography teachers to implement the environmental education,to improve students' env ironmental awareness,and also can provide some useful supports and helps for geography teachers in improving and discovering environmental education metho ds.This paper firstly employed the literature analysis method to analyze and su mmarize the domestic and international research on environmental awareness,an d the concept of environmental consciousness and composition as well as the di mension of the questionnaire were identified,which helped to compile the questi onnaire by combining the actual conditions.The questionnaires were distributed t o a sample of 300 high school Tibetan students in three schools in Gannan Cou nty and the questionnaire survey was conducted on the basis of collective measu rement and spot recovery,and additionally personal interviews were conducted w ith some teachers and students.Finally,the collected data were processed and a nalyzed by Excel and SPSS 18.0.The results showed that the Tibetan high scho ol students in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture have certain base of envir onmental knowledge,but the environmental awareness is in the shallow stage,th ere still has a long way for students to develop their environmental knowledge,environmental attitudes and environmental behavior.To be more specific,In theaspect of geography knowledge,though students have certain base of geographic environment knowledge,their environmental knowledge is not complete and re mains on the surface without deeply understanding the environmental problems a nd with huge limitations.Meanwhile,Students' overall knowledge of environment significantly varies according to their grades.In terms of students' attitudes tow ards the geography,students' attitudes are not active enough and are not aware of the relationship between environmental protection and sustainable development.As far as the environmental anticipatory behavior,students' environmental antic ipatory behavior on the whole is relatively positive,but they are less likely to b e active in preventing environmental damage.In addition,the research has also reflected that most students are concerned about the environmental problems surr ounding their life or occurring in China.Students have limited ways of obtainin g extra-curricular knowledge about environment and the environmental publicity accounts for a large proportion for helping students obtain environmental knowle dge.Students have willingness to learn environmental knowledge through extracu rricular books and newspapers.And students' attitudes towards environmental edu cation are more positive.Through the survey and analysis,it finds that there are some main factors that affect the environmental awareness of Tibetan high school students in Gannan Prefecture including: the low professional quality of teachers,the low level of students' Chinese.Based on the above research findings,combined with the relevant literature and local actual situation,the author puts forward some suggestions from the perspective of students,teachers,schools and superintendent,hopes to work together to effectively improve local students' environmental awareness.
