The dissertation aims to answer a question: what is the effect of the Force expansion by offensive realism state in the era of defensive realism? The problem can be broken down into two small questions: can expansion succeed? What is the key to success or failure? This article agrees with Shiping Tang ’s view that the world has entered the era of defensive realism after World War II,and on this basis, attempts to explore the expansion effect of "offensive realism state" which violate the mainstream norms in the era of defensive realism. The author chooses the expansionary war between the regional powers to test the theoretical proposition because there are few great powers waging the war against the great powers after World War II.The purpose of this paper is to study the effect on force expansion of offensive realism state in the era of defensive realism, explores the core elements of the success or failure of expansion, and analyzes whether the strategy of force expansion still has vitality and practical value in the era of defensive realism. In addition to the introduction and conclusion, this paper consists of three chapters: time change, theoretical construction and case analysis. The first chapter mainly discusses the characteristics of defensive realism era after World War II and the limitation of defensive realism. After World War II,the international system has undergone fundamental changes in both material and conceptual levels. The world has entered the era of defensive realism, and has had a far-reaching impact on the important issues of international relations, war, security, survival and conflict. However, the binding force of the international system on the state is limited, and the influence of the era of defensive realism has its limitations. The second chapter is the theoretical construction, defines the era of defensive realism, the state of offensive realism, and puts forward the explanation mechanism about the success or failure of the force expansion by the offensive realism state and the reason of the choice of the cases. The key to the success or failure of the expansion of the distribution of local power. The distribution of local power consists of the forces of belligerents and the forces of extraterritorial intervention. The forces of belligerents are mainly reflected in the military results of the war,and the forces of extraterritorial intervention are mainly the results of post-war political arrangements. The ultimate force of extra-territorial participation, which determines whether the expansion of regional powers’ armed force can be maintained,is the hegemony with a global military presence, the United States.Force expanding state’s intervention depends on whether expansion conflicts violate America’s core interests. The strategic position of the Middle East region is important and armed conflicts are frequent, and the great powers are deeply involved in their regional conflicts.Israel’s national history, geographical environment and strategic culture have shaped its status as an offensive realism state and its pre-emptive military strategy. Therefore, two Middle East wars launched by Israel are chosen as the test cases. The third chapter tests two basic propositions successfully through the Suez Canal War and the Six-Day War both launched by Israel. In the Suez Canal War,Israel achieved a military victory, but because its actions violated the core interests of the United States’ dominance in the Middle East and the disintegration of the colonial empire in the Middle East.Eventually, under the pressure of the United States, the expansion of the Sinai Peninsula was lost.During the Six-Day War,Israel severely hit Soviet allies and influence in the Middle East and promoted the strategic position of the United States in the Middle East. Therefore, even if its actions were seriously condemned by the international community, with the tacit approval and support of the United States, effectively maintained the achievements of the expansion..Through the investigation of the existing research results and the induction of the empirical facts, this paper proposes a logical explanation and a general mechanism, pointing out that the success or failure of the force expansion is the result of the distribution of local power. The distribution of local power consists of the forces of belligerents and the forces of extraterritorial intervention.Military action affects the success or failure of expansion has long been a normalcy in the history of mankind, but in the era of defensive realism, the key to the armed expansion of offensive realism state is don’t to violate the core interests of the hegemonic states,in order to obtain the acquiescence or support of the hegemonic states. |
