| The studies on the Image of China have been an important topic that has gained attention worldwide as nowadays China has become one of the largest economies and with biggest influences in the world.In the studies of a country’s Image,the media plays a fundamental role as it influences the way news is seen and interpreted.Therefore,when studying the Image of China one of the utmost important investigations is the study of the Image portrayed by media.There are not many investigations and researches that have studied the Image of China in Latin American media,and specifically regarding the Image of China in the Argentine media,there is not any study that has analyzed this phenomenon.Therefore,the significance for the elaboration of this investigation,from the theoretical aspect,resides in a rigorous study in the Image of China in the Argentine media by discovering how the Argentine media set agenda and frame China and enlighten and understand the reasons why.This study has not been investigated before and will contribute to complete a gap in the literature regarding the study of the Image of China.Furthermore,it will be a valuable and useful research for futures scholars studying the Image of China in Argentina and in Latin America,for scholars doing studies on China’s bilateral relation with Latin American countries,also for academics investigating the media coverage of China in other developing countries and for investigations on Argentine media coverage,among others researches.From the practical aspect,this investigation will be relevant to promote the mutual understanding and the bilateral relations between Argentina and China,as this study enlightens the limited and incomplete portrayed of China in the Argentine media due to the "cultural gap" and "cultural distance" between the two countries,that leads to the lack of comprehension and attention towards China.This investigation also encourages a reinforcement of the Chinese public diplomacy actions that could lead to a better understanding,knowledge and interest towards the country,and provides suggestions for the development of them.The present thesis is focused on the Image of China portrayed by the Argentine media from the 14th of March of 2013,when Xi Jinping was selected as president in China,due to the importance this ascent represented in the development of the Argentina and China bilateral relations,till the 14th of December of 2018,to provide a five-years study and present recent data and update information about the Argentina and China economic-political cooperation.The investigation is fulfilled by developing an Agenda Setting and Framing study,being able to present a quantitative and qualitative analysis using three methodologies:Content Analysis,Discourse Analysis and a Case Study analyzing 300 news of three recognized newspapers in Argentina.In the first part of the study,it is explained the aim of the investigation and the theoretical and practical significance of the study.This section also introduces the present study and provides a general overview of how the research will be fulfilled and the different analysis that will be achieved.Furthermore,it is explained the bilateral relations between Argentina and China,describing the "Integral Strategic Partnership"that both countries are encouraging today,that leads to a strengthening of the commercial relation between them and a closeness in their political ties.In Chapter 1,it is studied the two most pertinent theories for the purpose of the investigation;the Agenda Setting Theory and the Framing Theory,together with the concept of National Image and its relation with these theories.The last part of this Chapter,includes a research on previous studies on the Image of China in Latin America,where it is analyzed the work of scholars;the conclusions they reached and the limitations of their investigations that gives significance to this study.In Chapter 2,it is described the Research Design used for the investigation.It is first characterized the Research Objects selected for the study,which are the three chosen Argentine newspapers:La Nacion,Ambito Financiero and El Cronista.Secondly,it is developed and explained the Research Questions proposed for the investigation.It is then defined and described the three Methodologies used for the analysis:Content Analysis,Discourse Analysis and a Case Study together with the data collection and the research timeline for the investigation.In Chapter 3,it is analyzed the Argentine Media portray of China.In order to fulfill this,three main studies were accomplished dividing the Chapter into three parts.In the first part,it is studied the Argentine Media Agenda of China.For this,various analyzes are presented,which are,the study in the main Themes,main Subjects of Study,Length of the news stories and main Countries shown in the news stories of China in the three Argentine newspapers.In the second part,it is investigated the Argentine Media Framing of China.To achieve this,the main Tones shown in the news stories of China in the three Argentine newspapers were analyzed,together with the study in the use of vocabulary,words,phrases,and Titles in the news of China in the Argentine press.This part also includes an analysis in the three newspapers chosen for the research,where it is explored the similarities and differences they present.And in the last part of this Chapter,a Case Study is presented,that analyzes the arrival of the President of Argentina to China.In the Case study,it is discovered the main focus of attention the press gave to the event,the main themes that were present,the main tones that were used and the phrases and images that were shown.In Chapter 4,the reasons for the portrayed Image of China in the Argentine press are studied.In this part,it is investigated the economic and political focus the press gives to the portray of China and it is enlightened and explained the reasons why.In this Chapter the "cultural gap" and "cultural distance" between Argentina and China are exposed and described,and the stereotypes of China present in the Argentine media,that conditionate its portray,are examined.And in the last part of the study,the Conclusions are presented in a way that summarize the results achieved with the investigation,together with the Suggestions proposed for the study,that encourages public diplomacy strategies for the Chinese Government to develop in order to increase the knowledge and interest towards the country,that consequently,can lead to a better understanding between both countries. |
