National identity is an important foundation for a country to maintain national unity, social stability and unify national sovereignty. In our history,Chinese dynasties and the ethnic minorities have frequently interacted and communicated with each other. In this process, they have continuously established the identity of the ethnic minority to the central dynasty and gradually formed a pluralistic integration pattern of the Chinese nation. In current research,we can rarely find systematical studying on the construction of national identity of ethnic minorities in Chinese history. Therefore,it is of great theoretical significance and realistic requirement to explore the internal rationality and logic behind the construction of national identity of ethnic minorities in history. This study, selecting ethnic minorities in the downstream basin of Qingshui River in the Ming and Qing dynasties as the research object, will take the dual interaction of the central dynasty and the ethic areas in the downstream basin of the Qingshui River as the basic research perspective. Finally, the author aims at exploring the construction experience of national identity of ethnic minorities in the process of nationalization in this basin, and trying to summarize general theoretical guidance from the specific historical experience.During the Ming and Qing dynasties, how was the national identity of ethnic minorities in the downstream basin of Qingshui River constructed? What role does the central dynasty and the local play? What is the inherent logic behind the promotion of national identity among ethnic minorities? In order to answer the above propositions, the main theoretical tool selected in this study is the national identity theory. In the selection of methodology, this study combines normative research and empirical research, meanwhile, some analytical methods such as historical literature analysis, theoretical analysis and comparative analysis are also cross-used.To analyze well, information like various historical materials, folk contracts, inscriptions, surveys and interviews in the downstream basin of Qingshui River are included. The author finds that while the central dynasty promotes the national identity of ethnic minorities in politics and culture, the ethnic minorities themselves have corresponding responses. It is the interaction between the central dynasty and the ethnic minorities that builds the national identity of ethnic minorities together. For the rigor of argumentation, this study will be discussed into three parts to carry on the discussion. The main structure is as follows: The first part mainly tell us some significant concepts and theories, mainly including the introduction part and the chapter I.The introduction part begins with explaining the beginning of the problem, discusses the significance of the research topic, summarizes the relevant literature research at home and abroad, and finally summarizes the relevant theories and research frameworks. The chapter I focuses on the national concepts and national identity in the traditional Chinese context. The second part, including the chapter II,III and IV,is the main part of this study, which studying the way national identity of ethnic minorities was constructed. The chapter II demonstrates the national social structure and customs of the downstream basin of the Qingshui River during the period when it was out of national governance; The chapter III explores the specific ways in which the central dynasty promotes the construction of national identity of ethnic minorities, including political integration and cultural integration. The chapter IV examines the response of the ethnic minorities in the downstream basin of the Qingshui River under the leadership of the central dynasty, including the certain transformation of their concepts in political and cultural. The third part is the conclusion of the hole study. Here, the author will analyze and summarize the construction experience of national identity of ethnic minorities in the downstream basin of Qingshui River, and make further thinking and promotion on the research topic.
