Investigation On Behavior Problems And Influencing Factors Of Left-behind Preschool Children In Chizhou,Anhui Province

Objectives To understand the prevalence of the left-behind preschool children's(LBC)behavior problems and to explore the determinents that might affect behavior problems in rural preschool LBC,including general condition on family,parenting patterns and the outworking status of parent.The findings were expected to provide a guideline for strategies of intervention for behavior problems of the targeted population.Methods The stratified random cluster sampling was used in this study.Parents of children aged from 3 to 5 years old in rural Kindergartens in Chizhou City,Anhui Province,were investigated to collect the basic characteristics of children,general conditions of family,parenting patterns and the out-working status of parents.Conners Parent Symptom Questionnaire(PSQ)was applied to evaluate children's behavior problems.Epi Data 3.0 software was used to establish a data-base,and the data was analyzed by SPSS 18.0.Frequencies description,Chi-Square tests/Fisher exact probability tests,multivariate unconditional logistic regression analysis were used.Results Caregivers of 1,512 rural kindergarten children were investigated,including 180 fathers(11.9%),879 mothers(58.1%),438 grandparents(29.0%)and 15 others(1.0%).There were totally 482 LBC,accounting for 31.9% of the stuied sample.The left-behind rate in boys and girls was 32.0% and 31.7%,respectively.Among the 482 rural preschool LBC,there were 24 children(5%)with psychosomatic disorders,18 children(3.7%)with learning problems,8 children(1.7%)with hyperactivities,4 children(0.8%)with conduct disorders and 1 children(0.2%)with anxious symptom,and none of children had impulsive-hyperactivities.A total of 9 children(1.9%)had the above-mentioned two behavior problems and 2 of them(0.4%)had the three behavior problems.The prevalence of behavior problem in LBC and non-LBC was 8.7% and 7.6%,respectively.The difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05).Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that county,sex and guardian type were the influencing factors of behavior problems in rural preschool LBC.Compared with children in Guichi district,the risk of those in Shitai county raised to 4.089 times(OR=4.089,95% CI=1.486~11.250).The rate in girls was 0.364 times than that in boys(OR=0.364,95% CI=0.179~0.739).The risk of children whose caregivers were not parents was 0.324 times than those whose caregivers were parents(OR=0.324,95% CI=0.166~0.631).It was demonstrated that coping style of children,attitudes towards children among caregivers and caregiving type were the influencing factors of behavior problems among boys.The risk of behavior problems in children who had negative coping styles was 3.552 times than those who had positive coping styles(OR=3.552,95% CI=1.146~11.016).The risk was 8.366 times among those whose caregivers held various attitudes(OR=8.366,95% CI=2.141~32.687),and was 0.173 times in children whose caregivers were not parents(OR=0.173,95% CI=0.071~0.426).Conclusions The rate of left behind among preschool children in rural areas was relatively high.Psychosomatic disorders and learning problems were the main behavior problems detected in the LBC children.County,sex and caregiving type were the influencing factors of behavior problems.Coping style of children,attitudes towards children among caregivers and caregiving type were the ideterminants of behavior problems among boys.In the intervention of preschool LBC in rural areas,more attention should be paid to the poor families.Boys should be closely monitored.
