During the period of Lee Kuan Yew,the Singaporean government's foreign policy was known as pragmatism. It handled all kinds of international and regional issues cautiously and flexibly, and carried out diplomacy on other countries with the maintenance of national interests rather than ideological choices. The foreign policy toward China best reflects the strong pragmatic diplomacy style of the Singapore government and is an important part of Singapore's maintenance of its own survival and development.Singapore's foreign policy toward China will be adjusted and changed in different periods. In the Lee Kuan Yew period,it was divided into two phases. In the first phase(1965-1975),Singapore's politically prudent exchanges with China not only established diplomatic relations, but also cooperated in the economic and trade fields with China, and restricted humanities in China;the second phase(1976-1990),Singapore and China In the political establishment of diplomatic relations, the two sides have extensive exchanges in the fields of humanities and economy. This article intends to systematically explore the implementation of the Singaporean government's foreign policy toward China at each stage from the perspective of Singapore's pragmatic foreign policy and concludes the characteristics of Singapore's foreign policy toward China. The first part mainly discusses the background and main content of Singapore's pragmatic foreign policy. The twists and turns of the nation-building experience, unique geographical location, and complex domestic and international situation after independence have had a profound impact on Singapore's foreign policy.Since Singapore is a typical authoritarian system country,Lee Kuan Yews pragmatism is also in the formulation of Singapore's foreign policy. It left a deep trace.Singapore's foreign policy is the fundamental goal of safeguarding national sovereignty and security of the country. Therefore,it advocates strengthening relations with neighboring countries and advocating regional cooperation. In view of the importance of port trade,Singapore has carried out economic diplomacy and actively developed economic and trade ties with other countries. In addition,Singapore has also promoted the "balance of great powers"diplomacy and promoted the formation of multi-polar competition among major powers in Southeast Asia. However,it does not form an alliance with any other country and implements the "non-aligned" policy. The second part is to study Singapore's foreign policy toward China in the first stage of Lee Kuan Yew period, and analyze the background and content of its foreign policy toward China and its influence on Singapore itself. The threats from neighboring countries Malaysia and Indonesia have been hampering Singapore's China policy,so that Singapore did not dare to establish diplomatic relations with China and China.Singapore is also the only country in Southeast Asia where the number of Chinese nationals is dominant in the country, and Southeast Asia is now experiencing a wave of Chinese exclusion. This has led Singapore to be extra cautious when it comes to diplomacy with China.Singapore's foreign policy toward China at this stage has politically limited contacts with China on the basis of the establishment of diplomatic relations, and economic development has restricted China's economic and trade and humanities areas from communicating with China. The Singaporean government's foreign policy toward China is conducive to alleviating the concerns of its neighboring countries and safeguarding its own security. The third part discusses Singapore's foreign policy toward China in the second stage of Lee Kuan Yew period, and discusses the reasons, content and impact on Singapore of China's foreign policy at this stage. The formal establishment of diplomatic relations between China and China has cleared the biggest obstacle to the normalization of China-Singapore relations. The adjustment of domestic and foreign policies after the Cultural Revolution in China and the changes in the situation in Southeast Asia all prompted the Singapore government to implement a more active China policy.Politically,Singapore has formally established diplomatic relations with China. The economic and humanities fields have also developed faster than before.Singapore's diplomacy with China in this period promoted the development of Singapore's economy and,to a certain extent, enhanced its international status. The fourth part explains the Singaporean government's Taiwan policy during the period of Lee Kuan Yew.SingaporeLee Kuan Yews Taiwan policy is an important part of its foreign policy towards China and it also best reflects the pragmatic style of Singapore's foreign policy towards China.Singapore's Taiwanese policy is superior to the political and economic aspects in military affairs, mainly because Singapore needs Taiwan's field to train the military.Politically, the leaders of Singapore are closely associated with high-level Taiwanese;the depth of economic cooperation between the two sides exceeds that of the mainland. With regard to cross-strait relations, the Singaporean government has always adhered to the "one China" principle. It has diversified itself from quality inspections in Taiwan and mainland China and has engaged in balanced diplomacy. The fifth part mainly analyzes the characteristics of the Singapore government's foreign policy towards China. The Singapore government's foreign policy toward China is integrated with domestic policies to promote the building and strengthening of Singapore's national identity.Singapore has also regarded China as an important part of the implementation of the strategy of "balancing the great powers" and relying on China's strength to resist the expansion of the United States and the Soviet Union in the region. The good relationship between Lee Kuan Yew and Deng Xiaoping also promoted the development of relations between the two countries.
