| After the Cold War,the importance of culture,as an analyzing perspective in international relationship study has emerged.Culture plays an important role in foreign policy making.People always held a subjective impression that countries with similar culture will have more "common knowledge "and understand each other better.Also,in foreign policy making,there will be more consensuses.So that we subjectively think that Singapore,with large amount of Chinese immigrants and deeply influenced by Confucian culture,will keep a friendly relationship with China.However,according to the facts of China-Singapore relationship,culture proximity has a restraint effect,Singapore’s foreign policy towards China is opposite to the expectation we held.For example,Singapore constantly keeps a substantial relationship with Chinese Taiwan authorities and also publicly challenges China in the South China Sea issue.The relationship between China and Singapore is not as intimate as we expected.So,here comes the question that how does culture proximity influenced international relations and what restraints are there in its effects in realism dominated international society.Author firstly gives out the definition of culture proximity and build up an assessment model of cultural intimacy.Then in the second part,author gives a detailed description of the culture proximity between China and Singapore regarding the blood relationship and the political philosophy influenced by Confusion’s culture.Then,by analyzing the historical development and typical cases of Singapore policy towards China,author will find out the opposites from China’s expectation.Finally,after the forgoing discuss,author concludes that culture proximity as a influence factor of international relationship has its restraints.Then,author will give some advice about China’s policy making on cultural diplomacy.The method of this thesis paper is case study and literature review.During the writing,the author raised a new concept-culture proximity,which has fill in gaps in related research. |
