A Project Report On The C-E Translation Of The First Chapter Of A Study On The Painting And Calligraphy Market During The Early Period Of The Republic Of China(1912-1937)

With the deepening of economic globalization and the implementation of the “Belt and Road” initiative,international academic exchanges have been increasingly frequent,which makes it possible for academic works to be imported and exported in large quantities.As a result,academic translation has become more significant than ever.Based on the C-E translation of the first chapter of A Study on the Painting and Calligraphy Market during the Early Period of the Republic of China(1912-1937),this project report analyzes the major difficulties during translation and proposes corresponding solutions under the guidance of Skopostheorie.Major obstacles fall into two categories: lexicon and syntax.The former one includes culture-loaded words and titles of Chinese ancient works;the latter one is composed of long sentences and classical Chinese sentences.According to the three principles of Skopostheorie,namely,the skopos rule,the coherence rule and the fidelity rule,the following methods are proposed.Lexically,for culture-loaded words,various compensation approaches are adopted flexibly,such as transliteration,transliteration plus annotation or literal translation,fuzzification and free translation.For titles of Chinese ancient works,both noun phrases and gerundial phrases are employed.Syntactically,for long and complicated sentences,advisable methods are division and combination according to the length and logic of the sentence.For classical Chinese sentences,explicitation is recommended to produce a clearer and more readable translation.This report summarizes the relevant approaches to the difficulties during translation,aiming to provide some reference for the C-E translation of academic texts and make a humble contribution to Chinese academic works' “going-out”.
