A Supplement To Yuan Haowen And Wang Shizhen's Poetics Poemscan can be found in his poetry anthology called Licuncaotang. These 48 poems are supplements to Yuan Haowen's 30 Poems and Wang Shizhen' Parody of yuanyishan's quatrains on Poetry. This paper combines the contents of Tan zongjun's poetry anthology poetry notes of Lichun thatched cottage and his literary anthology collection of xigutang, interpretate Tan zongjun's quatrains, and explores his life and the contents of his quatrains. Then,I find out his pragmatic Confucianism thought under the textual research of his simple learning, his legal concept of criminal name for practical use,and his confusive western response in the predicament of helping the world,so as to determine his representative significance as a typical intellectual in the Qing Dynasty.Through the in-depth analysis of Tan zongjun's quatrains on poetry, this paper finds that his quatrains on poetry are systematic, attach importance to nationality and regionality, select poems to fill in the gaps, and pay special attention to the poetic historical view of the poet group. At the same time,it also points out the limitations of Tan zongjun's interpretation of some poets and poetics, which can also be found in other scholars at that time. Then, this paper summarizes Tan zongjun's adherence to traditional poetics, his new changes in Confucian poetry education, his acceptance of poetry writing methods and his inheritance of historical and literary views under the influence of down-to-earth learning. These are the products of Tan zongjun's style of study at that time.In the end, this paper concludes that Tan zongjun is a miniature of most of the traditional intellectuals in the late Qing Dynasty. Therefore, the analysis and criticism of the thoughts and values contained in his poems can give a glimpse of the typical thoughts and attitudes of the traditional literati in the Qing Dynasty in the historical and academic environment.
