Translation Strategies For Restrictive Attributive Clauses In Scientific Texts From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

In recent years,influenced by factors such as global warming,frequent extreme weather events and serious water pollution,issues like the current situation of available water resources,the sustainability of future water resources,and water resource management,have attracted increasing attention and concern.Water Resource Management: Sustainability in an Era of Climate Change,a book written by David E.Mc Nabb and published in 2017,is mainly about how water resource managers in the United States are devoting further effort to provide clean fresh water for the present and future generations in an increasingly hostile environment.The source text of the present translation practice report is selected from the first five chapters of this book,and its main contents are: the state of America’s water resource,internal pressures on the resource,external pressures on the resource(climate change,population growth and urbanization)and beginnings of water management in the US.The source text belongs to scientific texts.There are a large number of attributive clauses with complex structures in the source text,and most of them are restrictive attributive clauses.The translator analyzes and explores translation strategies for restrictive attributive clauses based on the three rules of Skopos Theory──skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule.In accordance with the structural features of restrictive attributive clauses in the source text,the translator vertically classifies the restrictive attributive clauses in the source text into three categories: single,coordinate and embedded restrictive attributive clauses.The translator adopts the strategies of conversion,combination and division to translate single restrictive attributive clauses,adopts pre-position and division to translate coordinate restrictive attributive clauses and adopts the strategies of recasting and synthesis to translate embedded restrictive attributive clauses,hoping to provide some reference for the translation practice of attributive clauses in scientific texts.This report consists of six chapters.Chapter One briefly introduces the background and significance of the study and the layout of the thesis.Chapter Twodescribes the translation task,including the introduction of the source text and the translation process.Chapter Three introduces the origin and development of Skopos Theory,focusing on the three rules of Skopos Theory.Chapter Four gives a brief introduction to attributive clauses and the features and classifications of the restrictive attributive clauses in the source text.Chapter Five is case analysis,which discusses the translation strategies for restrictive attributive clauses under the guidance of the three rules of Skopos Theory,i.e.division,combination,conversion,pre-position,recasting and synthesis.Chapter Six is the conclusion,summarizing the findings and limitations of the translation practice,and the suggestions for future study.
