A Report On The Translation Of The Startup Way (Chapters 3-4)

This is a practical translation report under the guidance of J.C.Catford's translation shift theory.All the examples are selected from the translation practice in Chapters Three and Four of The Startup Way.This book is written by a well-known entrepreneur Eric Ries.Based on his personal entrepreneurial experience,Ries discussed how to apply the concept of “Lean Startup” to various organizations,and provided a creative environment for companies to develop.This book is an information-oriented text with many professional terms and explanatory charts.Therefore,the translator needs to deliver the information as well as reproduce the language features of the source text.J.C.Catford,a British translation theorist,first put forward the translation shift theory in A Linguistic Theory of Translation.From the perspective of linguistics,Catford explained the formal departures from the source language to the target language and the linguistic transformation in the process of translation,including level shifts and category shifts.The translation shift theory,which is practicable and feasible with clear classification,can guide the translator to solve the difficulties encountered in translation.The translation can be more smooth and conform to the reading habits of target readers.The report is mainly divided into six parts.Chapter One and Chapter Two respectively introduce the translation project and The Startup Way.Chapter Three illustrates the translation process,including pre-translation preparation,translation process and quality control.Chapter Four briefly discusses Catford's translation shift theory and its core concepts.Chapter Five is a case study under the guidance of translation shift theory.Chapter Six summarizes the gains and limitations.By combining the theory and translation practice,this report aims to improve the translation quality and summarize some basic translation skills.Meanwhile,it will also enrich the studies of translation shift theory,providing reference for further researches.
