This paper studies Cen Jiawu’s concept of art.His research fields mainly cover art,folklore,ethnology,anthropology,sociology and other fields.He is an expert in modern and contemporary Chinese folklore,anthropology and ethnology,and teaches in turn in Central South University for nationalities,National Art College,Zhongshan University,National College of social education and other universities,and publishes “totem art history”,“Collection of Chinese art”,“Collection of research works of Cen Jiawu on nationality”.At present,the research on his artistic concept has not been paid enough attention.Therefore,this paper studies the concept of Cen Jiawu’s prehistoric totem art,ancient Chinese art and modern national art from a diachronic perspective.The first part of the article mainly studies Cen Jiawu’s concept of totem art by means of literature perusal.Cen Jiawu first pointed out that we must study totem art on the basis of totem system,because this is the background of totem art.According to Cen Jiawu,a certain social and economic basis determines its artistic style,totem system was produced in the late Paleolithic period when primitive human hunted and collected.Based on the detailed classification of totem art by Cen Jiawu,this paper summarizes and analyzes the limitations and enlightenment of Cen Jiawu’s research on totem art.The second part mainly discusses Cen Jiawu’s research on ancient Chinese art concept by using the method of literature analysis.Cen Jiawu demonstrated the research background of ancient Chinese art from the perspective of sociology,so as to carry out the research on the specific content of ancient Chinese art.The research perspective of Cen Jiawu involves the question of drawing resemblance and the theory of empathy of the appreciator.He puts ancient Chinese art in the background of Western and Chinese art theories and opens up the research ideas of ancient Chinese art concepts.The third part explores Cen Jiawu’s study on national art issues.From the theoretical perspective of Marxist national view,this paper analyzes the unique perspective and thinking of Cen Jiawu’s research on national art,so as to correctly understand the precious value of our national art.Using comparative method to analyze the art of outfield in the same period,the value of foreign art is not always advanced,and the study further promotes our attention and protection of traditional culture and custom,this is the root of the development of culture today.
