Translation Strategies Of Adventure Game

Past few years have witnessed rapid growth in China’s game industry.An increasing number of Chinese game developers are exploring overseas markets,which generated demand for game localization.In the process of the localization of a game,the translation of its script plays a vital role,because the quality of translation has a great influence on how the localized game performs in the target market.However,studies on translation of Chinese games into English are quite insufficient.Based on the translation program of an adventure game,the thesis discusses the textual features of the script of Adventure games(ADV),and explores what strategies translators can adopt to create high-quality translation of such game and improve the user experience.In order to provide high-quality translation,translators have to do in-depth research of the text,analyze its features,and devise specific strategies accordingly.Having analyzed the text,the author finds that the text features limited information acquisition approaches for players,progressive information presenting mode,limited space for text,and its literariness.Moreover,the language is mainly colloquial,partly literary,and sometimes does not accord with Chinese usage.And last but not least,in the game,elements of the Three Kingdoms and western fantasy are adopted.Given the features of the text,the author comes up with several strategies including translating in a low register and simplifying translation to keep it simple and clear;clarifying the logic of the text,using short sentences properly,and highlighting characters’ features in translation to improve readability from the perspective of language;and back translating certain proper nouns properly,and use some idioms to improve readability from the perspective of culture.Hopefully,this thesis can be of some help for translating the scripts of ADVs.
