Translating Chinese Galgame Lines From The Perspective Of Cross-cultural Communication: Challenges And Solutions

This thesis intends to discuss the challenges and solutions of translating Chinese Galgame lines into English,from the perspective of cross-cultural communication.Galgame is a type of game that is rooted in Japanese animation culture and is relatively rare in the game market of Western countries.The process of transplanting it into the game market of Western countries is still in the early stage.Therefore,the translation of Chinese Galgame lines into English faces many challenges arising out of cultural differences.This thesis takes as an example the J Game Script Translation Project that the author has participated in.J game is a Galgame that integrates elements of other game types.It has the characteristics of Galgame: It is a product aimed at fulfilling men's fantasies about women and romantic relationships and it has erotic content.Most of the original text in the project is lines of the characters in J Game.The author summarizes the challenges of translating Chinese Galgame lines into English,from the perspective of cross-cultural communication: Some Galgame lines severely objectifies women;ACG cultural buzzwords are frequently seen in the lines of Galgame;and some erotic lines are too vulgar.Based on his view that translation is an act of cultural transformation,the author first puts forward an overall strategy that should be followed when translating Chinese Galgame lines,namely domestication.Subsequently,under the guidance of the overall strategy of “domestication,” the author puts forward specific strategies to cope with each of the three challenges mentioned above: rewrite or omit the lines that objectify women in a unbearable way;interpret the ACG cultural buzzwords in the translation concisely;and rewrite or omit erotic lines that are too vulgar or too immoral.
