A Report On The Consecutive Interpreting For A Visit To The Louvre Museum

This report is based on the experience of a consecutive interpreting conducted by the author in the Louvre Museum of France.Entrusted by Gansu Western Travel Agency,the author went to Europe with four Chinese tourists on April 21^st,2019,and provided them with local guiding service and interpreting service.One of the most crucial interpreting tasks was to provide interpreting service for the four clients in the Louvre Museum.Since the clients paid for an English-speaking docent from the Louvre,whose prime responsibility was to introduce the various collections in the museum to visitors,the major task for the author was to interpret what the docent had delivered.This report introduces the whole process of this interpreting task in detail,including task description,preparation before interpreting,process description,self-evaluation and clients feedback after interpreting,as well as case analysis under the guidance of Interpretive Theory.In the first chapter,the author conducts an introduction to the background of the task,the clients and the entrusting party,as well as the significance of the selection of Interpretive Theory.In the second chapter,the background of the Louvre Museum,the objectives and characteristics of the interpreting task as well as the requirements of the entrusting party are introduced.In the third chapter,the author first presents the preparation before the interpreting task,including the introduction to the Louvre and some world-renowned collections in the museum,the anticipated difficulties,interpreting tools,guiding theory,three interpreting methods and terminologies.Secondly,the author describes the process of the task.In the last part of this chapter,the author presents the content of post-interpreting,including self-evaluation,clients’feedback and the feedback from the entrusting party.The fourth chapter is case analysis.In this chapter,the author makes a detailed analysis of some typical cases in this interpreting task from the perspectives of terminologies,Greek mythologies and allusions together with long and complex sentences under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory.In the last chapter,the author makes a summary and reflection over the whole report and the task.Interpretive Theory was chosen as the guiding theory of the report,which emphasizes that interpreting seeks equivalence in meaning rather than in linguistic form.In regard to the interpreting of introductions to artworks,interpreters need to accurately grasp the meaning of the source language instead of copying the linguistic shell.The author hopes that this report can serve as a reference for interpreters preparing for the interpreting related to works of art and introductions towards museum collections.
