Research Into Design And Application Of Nanling Ten-Beast Lamp To Illustrations

Initiated during the period under the reign of Emperor Daoguang(1821 –1850),Nanling Ten-Beast Lamp prevailed in Xixiang Village,Nanling County,having been passed down from generation to generation in Yamujiao Natural Village,Yashan Village,Hewan Town for around 190 years.In 2006,it was included into the first batch of intangible cultural heritage of Anhui Province.The name of Ten-Best Lamp was derived from the name of ten beasts in The Legend of Deification,including “qilin”(“Chinese dragon”),“qingshi”(“blue lion”),“heihu”(“black tiger”),“baixiang”(“white elephant”),“xiezhi”(“haechi”),“tan”(“a greedy dragon-like beast”),“hou”(“a dog-like beast”),“diting”(“a beast with a tiger head,a single horn,a dog ear,dragon body,lion tail,and dragon feet”),“sibuxiang”(“elk”),etc.With local drama costumes,props,and facial makeups as the keynote,with “ten beasts” in the mythology and legend as the blueprint,and folk songs and dance as the basis,Ten-Beast Lamp integrates the art of facial makeup,drama,painting,folk paper cutting,mythology and legend to form the unique style and charm,and become an important part of the folk culture in Yashan,Nanling.With the acceleration of modernization,people have entered the “image reading era”.The spread of “image” is more direct and visible than the text spread.As an important part of mass communication,illustration exists as a major way of communication.In this paper,Nanling Ten-Beast Lamp is combined with the illustration design.Through the graphic design,and the illustration design,which is familiar to the public,the traditional folk culture and modern illustration are combined to integrate Ten Beast-Lamp with the era characteristics,and endow it with the new vigor of life.This paper adopts Nanling Ten-Beast Lamp illustration design as the research object,and combines the literature analysis,field survey,comprehensive analysis,and practice research,to examine and integrate the folk cultural connotation and visual image characteristics of Nanling Ten-Beast Lamp.Through the summary and extraction of artistic patterns,color characteristics and patterns,the shape characteristics,color match and pattern characteristics suitable for the modern illustration design are summarized.At last,the Ten-Beast Lamp illustrations with local characteristics are created so that more people will know and appreciate Ten-Beast Lamp,thus improving the dilemma facing the inheritance of Ten-Beast Lamp.
