In September 1936,Lin Yutang with Huang Jiade and Huang Jiayin brothers worked together in Shanghai to create the monthly magazine called Xifeng which aims to translate the essence of Western magazines and introduce the social life of Europe and America to the new citizens in China.The main contents of Xifeng translates are western popular magazines,it contains social politics,economy,culture,science,life,ideology,education,etc.At the same time,Xifeng also encourages local writers to create actively.Through the cultural activities such as translation and creation,Xifeng builds a series of modern western social images for the domestic readers,with a view to developing the modern interest of modern citizens in the process of reading and acceptance.This paper is divided into four chapters.In the introduction part,firstly,while affirming the ideas of magazines that followed from “Lunyu”group,it points out the characteristics and social significance of Xifeng,and on this basis,the research value is determined.Secondly,this paper reviews the current academic research on the Xifeng and the development of modern citizens’ interest.Finally,determine the research ideas,and explain the research contents and methods.The first chapter is a summary of Xifeng.By restoring the historical background of running the magazine,this paper explains the purpose of running the magazine,and expounds the concept of running the magazine from the two angles of "advocating Western articles in magazine" and "introducing the social life in Europe and America".The second chapter analyzes the image of modern society of citizens constructed by Xifeng from two aspects: the construction of Western society by Xifeng and the exposure of local stereotypes and bad tastes by Xifeng.The third chapter focuses on clarifying the relationship between the modern society of citizens and the interest of modern citizens,and on the basis of exploring the social construction of the previous discussion,refining the modern civil interest advocated by Xifeng,combined with the literary activities of the editor of Xifeng.The fourth chapter discusses the historical significance of Xifeng in the cultivation of interest of modern citizens.In the end,on the basis of the summary of the full text,analyzes the practical enlightenment of Xifeng in the cultivation of modern citizens’ interest.
