This is a project report on the translation of the three chapters extracted from Rough Ride,an autobiography by Paul Kimmage in which the writer gives a detailed description of his cycling life.By translating this book, the translator aims to advocate perseverance.Meanwhile, the book uncovers the hard work of athletes, which may remind Chinese readers to support national athletes and respect athletes abroad.Written in simple words and sentences, this autobiography is casual in writing style.Hence, the translation version should present the same writing style. What's more, the autobiography is mainly composed of short sentences with same subjects, which need to be deleted when translated.According to Peter Newmark's text typology, the book combines the characteristics of expressive, informative texts. Therefore, the translator follows the semantic translation to ensure that the translation version is faithful to the original one.Meanwhile,to make the translation version suitable to read, the translator is also guided by communicative translation with the aid of many translation skills to ensure the expression is smooth and natural by revising parts that might be awkward to Chinese readers.By doing this translation project, the translator has learned that grasping the writing style of the original book is the first step of translation.Meanwhile, translation is more difficult than merely understanding.Every word and detail should be taken into consideration and the Chinese version should be smooth in logic.
