In recent years,with the improvement of China’s international status and the enhancement of cultural soft power,the education of international students and the Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages have developed rapidly,so that more and more attentions have been paid to the use of Chinese names of foreign students in China.The Chinese names of foreign students are pragmatic phenomena and products of intercultural communication.This article uses pragmatics as the basic theory,combined with linguistics and related theories to intercultural communication.The Chinese names of 303 foreign students studying Chinese in China were studied by literature survey,questionnaire survey,statistical induction and comparative analysis.Based on the investigation of the use of Chinese names of foreign students,four pragmatic functions are summarized,such as deixis,address function,identity function and emotional function.At the same time,the names have rich expression characteristics.In terms of phonetic features,non-transliteration Chinese names are the most common ones.Most of them are chosen with low initial vowels,low loudness,different tone combinations,and various ways of rhyming and collocation.In terms of grammatical features,transliteration of simplex words and preadditive compound Chinese names are peculiar phenomena.In terms of semantics,there are many Chinese names that are not related to the meaning of the original name.Most of the meanings in the language are pinned on the good wishes and wishes of the naming people.They can be classified into ten categories.From the perspective of cultural structure,Chinese surnames are indispensable parts of the Chinese names of foreign students.In terms of rhetorical features,the three main rhetorical devices,such as metonymy,quote and homophone,are used to express the meaning of Chinese names.In terms of word use,the number of Chinese characters with strokes of 8 is the largest.The selected Chinese characters have only six structures: left-right structure,left-middle-right structure,up-down structure,upper-middle-lower structures,whole-surround structure and semi-surround structure.High frequency words reflect the strong gender consciousness of overseas students.Based on the questionnaire and interviews with Chinese teachers and foreign students,the paper also analyzes the reasons for the formation of Chinese names and functions of foreign students from three aspects: linguistic context,situational context and cultural context.Finally,through the analysis of the context factors and the description of the expression characteristics of the Chinese name of the foreign students,this paper puts forward some suggestions for teachers of Chinese as a foreign language.
