| Traditional English teaching lays more stress in memory than in application,which has resulted in many English learners’ lack of confidence in English learning and poor grades.In response to this phenomenon,many educators have conducted related researches and they have found that experiencing teaching can help improve students’ comprehensive language skills by creating a context close to life and adopting language practice activities.The research has got some achievements but there is still much room for expansion,which means further research is of great necessity.The students from two classes from Zhangzhou Experimental Middle School were taken as subjects,among which Class 11 was the experimental class and Class 14 the control class.Experiencing teaching was applied in Class11 and traditional method in Class14 in order to verify two hypotheses:1)The experiencing teaching can better improve grades of junior middle school students than the traditional method.2)The experiencing teaching can better boost the students’ self-confidence in English learning than the traditional method.Twelve students at different levels in the experimental class were interviewed at the end of the teaching experiment so as to know more about the students’ attitudes and views on experiencing teaching,The results show that: 1)After one semester of teaching experiment,students in the experimental class got higher grades than those of the control class with a significant difference in the two classes(P=0.017),indicating that experiencing teaching can better improve grades than the traditional method.2)After one semester of teaching experiment,there is no significant difference in self-confidence between the two classes(P = 0.660),but the experimental class make a greater progress in self-confidence than the control class.The results of this research confirm that the experiencing teaching can not only improve students’ grades and self-confidence,but also achieve the goals of participation,engagement,enjoyment and enhancement by creating contexts and practical activities close to life.Therefore,it is suggested that the teachers adopt experiencing teaching to improve the effectiveness of English class teaching in junior middle school. |
